Description I fly to the top of the tulip tree to feel the rising sun on my breast. The wind ruffles my feathers, and I know that I am beautiful.

Taken in the photographer's garden, Overland Park Kansas at 7:30, 12/29/11.

Lens: Canon EF 300mm 1:2.8 L IS II with a 1.4X converter. Camera: EOS 5D Mark II, on an old and trusty Monfrotto tripod.

But the real trick to this photo is that this bird hatched in my garden and his parents fed him an abundance of healthy seed provided by me. That was after I had planted the trees.

All this: equipment; labor; expense; time, and patience is my way of thanking God for the dawn.

This certainly is an eyecatcher! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="23" height="15" alt="" title="Wow!"/>

The vibrant reds against a dull background drew me towards this photograph instantly (that and the bird is absolutely adorable! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/l/l… " width="26" height="17" alt="" title="Love"/>)

Although one of the twigs at the front is attempting to steal the limelight (I see you there, right in front of the lens!) the bird is still in focus and a proud subject for this picture.

It's always nice to see pictures of happy birdies in the wild, looking both healthy and typically cheeky.

Shame I never get to see these creatures so close, they have a very exotic appearance e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>.

Keep up the great work!

first may i start off by saying that this photo is totally gorgeous! i absolutely love how the photo is fully focused and clear on the bird ( and the colour of the bird is so deep and rich and gogeous by the way ) but the bird isn't fixated in the center. it's perfectly positioned off to the left a bit, and i think it wouldve looked silly right in the center. i also applaud your choice of going for a more square-crop on this photo, it looks so much better than a regualr landscape crop. I gave you a 4/5 for originality because I have seen some similar photos here around dA, but the impact of this photo is so much better than the others, mainly i think because of the contrast and how deep it is. i love this photo, it's already in my faveorites folder! <3

Thank you, Kendra, for having taken the time to write this critique. The colour of the bird is indeed deep and rich, but, hardest of all, it is true. The color of the cardinal is almost impossible to duplicate correctly, as I have learned over the years. I have only been able to do this recently, after having spent a small inheritance on the purchase of this particular lens. It is the best lens that Canon makes, as good, I think as a Lieca lens, and it demonstrates the unfair advantage that equipment makes in photography. But that is a very good lesson to learn. Invest in the glass. Now I must learn what else it can do, which is like starting all over again. But that keeps me young and engaged in the world. There's a lesson in that as well, I guess, but not one as important as the fact that the lens is more crucial that either camera or computer in making a satisfying photograph. I loved your thoughtful comments. Thank you.

I love how the background looks like its moving, while the bird and branches are so clear. The lighting is quite good and this, as well as the bird's pose gives a very imposing tone to the whole of the photo!! Excellent shot!!

Going as far as to planting trees to attract birds and feeding them special seeds to make them more healthy and photogenic is probably the most extreme form of commitment to photography that I've ever heard of.
