I guess my question would be are these awsome textures used for things like backgrounds and such?...What use would they have in the 3d modeling world?

Of course! These can be used for all sorts of things other than 2D work. For example: texturing your 3D meshes, creating your diffuse maps, spec maps, etc.
Your creativity is the only limit. For example, with the use of layer modes, this texture could help you make your 3D model look aged, grungy, dirty. Or - with masking - it could also help you add a mossy effect to rocks.
Hope I could help a bit. ^^

Perhaps with a little transparency and laid over a diffuse color....I see. I know as a mask they work great to allow 2 colors to blend based on a B/W version of this texture. I just liked the colors and varieties here. Can you point me to any examples you may know of a texture like this being used on a 3d model? Could get the mental juices moving some.

I'm afraid I cannot. It is a more complex thing, 3D texturing is rarely about using only _one_ texture. It is about combining multiple textures, and at times you cannot even tell that a certain texture was used, because it is blended so well, you only see the whole complete look and not the indivitual textures. I hope that makes some sense.
Lookie, here is an awesome video on texturing. It is not a step by step tutorial, but someone's workflow. From around 17mins starts the texturing part. You will see how flexible the process of texturing is, there isn't only one way to do it, it is about experimenting.

Good thing is that cloaks Β provides a free non-commercial sample as well too. You can try it, experiment with it and should you decide to use it commercially or need it in higher res, you can purchase the premium version anytime.
Just remember to keep your diffuse maps subtle, and don't be afraid of experimenting! The best things are always caused by "happy accidents".

Love the grunge feel to it. I kinda get an Urbex feel from this texture. For sure cool ^^
