It was a shock when Dei revealed what had happened to Madigan. It was another shock when Dei announced she was going to the mountains to return her lover's body . The cats were still in the mountains. It was dangerous and already had proven deadly but then again- with the lack of light- so was the Ram.

Enda for her part became the hoofmaiden she had never wanted to be when she was younger- but now took the mantle willingly, for a friend. There was so much that she wanted to say to Dei as Dei turned her hooves toward the cold mountains, but the words never quite made it past her throat before the battle-princess left her children in Enda's care while Dei chased a ghost.

While the children kept Enda busy, active, distracted and distressed- the nights were restless and sleep only came during the lightening of the sky. Ghosts haunted Enda during the night, chasing sleep away- and no distraction, no amount of herbal remedies could ease the distraught thoughts spinning through her head. She had not shed a tear while so many young eyes were watching when Dei walked toward the Ridgeback mountains. But, after she had left, in the dark of a starry sky and under the deep shadows of her willow tree, Enda cried silently.

She might not ever see her friend again.

She might not even ever know if Dei had succeeded until she made the long journey back to the Needle, with the bones of her dead mate.

She might have just lost another person she loved.

And there was nothing she could do about it.
