Some have assumed this, but it wasn't very credible when you think about the time. I don't remember what was the specific explanation, but the result was: if Caroline adopted Chell, she was at least 60 years old, not very credible.

It's more about the translated lyrics to cara mia. Where Chell is called her darling little girl, specific references to bring your daughter to work day, and repeatedly saying that Chell was adopted. Story tellers don't include things that don't contribute in some way.
However Word of God hasn't weighed in one way or another.
