I always prefer seat and lid down (animals), and I'm lesbian. In a multiple gender house, it seems to be..just don't whine about it. Although... almost falling into a toilet at 2 in the morning... is quite annoying... and gross. Safe reason = In of diarrhea just lafve the seat down. I have a couple/2 friends. He has a nervous stomach and have like 8 cats and a dog... lid and seat is always down. It's a male/female couple too.

Really simple. Women always sit, while men sometimes sit (when they poop), so the toilet seat goes down.

I have a third suggestion that would also satisfy everyone, especially for these with a larger bathroom. Instead of having a bidet installed next to the toilet, a devise that no one really uses anyway, install a urinal. This will not only avoid any conflict but will also be a great conversation piece every time you have friends over.

There is an actual health issue supporting lowering the lid. If you flush without the whole lid down all the bacteria in your poop/pee (yes, pee isnΒ΄t sterile after all) fly to the air and land on every surface including your toothbrush. I personally just donΒ΄t want to breathe the bacteria of brush my teeth with it.

Couldn't you make the same argument for men? And, furthermore, women face away from the toilet when they are peeing, men face towards it. Therefore, men are more likely to notice that the seat is in the wrong position (since women immediately turn away from it). And, furthermore furthermore, if men pee on the toilet seat it's easy enough to clean it up with a piece of toilet paper, but if a woman falls into a bowl of toilet water (even worse if the person before didn't flush), she has to go through a much more humiliating and disgusting clean up process.

1. Your sarcasm is not witty, it just makes you seem condescending.
2. I wasn't trying to make some speech about the patriarchy and their evil toilet conspiracy, I'm just making a logical argument. It takes the same amount of effort for men and women to lift/put the seat down, but women have more to lose if they make a mistake than men. If it were the other way around, if men had more to lose than women, then I would of course say that the seat should be left up, but that's not the case. I don't hate men or their preferred pissing position.

You literally have nothing to lose by falling into a toilet, unless you somehow decide to sit in the toilet fully clothed and in one that has piss and shit from the person before. Nobody has more to lose. Everybody falls into a bowl of water.
If somebody fell in and got an infection, it's not even the question that someone caused you to fall in my leaving the seat up: you're just so ignorant of the toilet you're not even cleaning it
