Week 18 – First Shoes of the Season

The farrier came out this week to give our horses their first set of shoes for the year. The typical-average horse here is shod for 6 to 8 months of the year and goes bare the other 4 to 6. Weather is one of two main factors in when and how long the shoes are on; work load is the other. Unless there is a problem requiring the farrier to return early, the horses next shoe fitting will be in 6 to 8 weeks.
