Why is this game so popular? I mean, the characters' artistic designs are cool and all, but the game itself seemed really barebones and empty, and certainly nothing worth THIS level of attention.

That only further proves my point! People are in love with literally one level of a game that has yet to show us what it's actually about.

You can actually gather quite a bit just in that first level as far as the larger themes in the game. Bendy is loosely based on Felix the Cat and Mickey Mouse, but he's a demon with an obvious penchant for the occult. Believe it or not, you can actually find many occult symbols throughout many early Felix animations and Disney's early work if you look carefully. Bendy attempts the bring these cryptic origins to light, while telling it's own mysterious narrative that seems similar to the story of Frankenstein's monster. He's out to punish his creators for making him in the first place.

I gathered that it was about an animated character based off of Disney's early work that was essentially a demonic Frankenstein's monster. Anyone who watched a playthrough of how much ofΒ the game is actually finished knows that.
What I DON'T understand is why everyone is in love with such a barebones game that takes about 8 minutes to finish. I understand the fanart, because the game does have a legitimately retroactive art style, but character design alone shouldn't get a game this far in terms of popularity.
