Description Watercolour and pen on Bristol Board - A4

This is a branch of 'Crassula ovata', commonly known as the money or jade plant.

I painted it from life in the style of a traditional botanical illustration. It was a challenging exercise, especially since the plant grew surprisingly fast, seeming to change shape every day! I've always found scientific illustration very inspiring - I think it's a style which suits both my love for detail and for nature!

Great job on this. It seems very alive, and you used the little details to make it seem real, though I know from experience it takes a lot of concentration and time.

The colors and the textures look very realistic and the composition is nice and simple.

It reminds me of the little Baobab tree I had for many years.

this is really beautiful and so lifelike.
there is a lot of depth and intricate details, i can tell you really studied the plant closely
how did you achieve that mottled texture/look on the leaves?

Thank you!
For the mottled leaves I first began by applying a lot of smooth green washes, building up the colour until it was quite dark. I then took a very thin brush and applied tiny dots of white across the whole surface of each leaf so the dark background colour became pale and mottled. On top of the white dots, I then added dots of greens, building up the texture until it looked right - it took a long time! Hope that makes sense
