I'm a major cop out on this one, because I'm going to say there are simply too many things i love about this picture to list them all.
Aw hell, I'll try.
the shading on his fur *looks* simple, but on deeper inspection, it's incredibly well textured, even if it's simply done. The colour work on the clothing is incredible, adding to the ancient japanese art style look. The faint blossom petals drifting by aren't overdone, just nicely understaded to hint at the tranquil mood. And I like the jaunty tilt of the head, giving him a whimsical air.

You know, the background, plus the way he's looking, makes it look like he's stabbing somebody. It has that eerie deadly yet beautiful vibe to it.
