Description Okay, most work intensive pun ever. Depicting Varanus priscus ("the Dragon") and Homo floresiensis ("The Hobbit") in the Halls of Erebor ( the lonely mountain from "The Hobbit"). The critters were even contempories though geographically separated and the drawing is roughly to scale when taking V. priscus to be represented by QMF 2947.

"Girion, Lord of Dale, is dead and I have eaten his people like a wolf among sheep"

Tolkien would be so proud. His creations had some basis in reality.

never thougt of that, but komodo dragons really areΒ  what comes closest to the fantasy dragons in size and appearance in the real world. very clever.

A Komodo Dragon as Smaug? great idea! And although I'm an Indonesian, I never even thought of that.. *slapped*

Thx. Actually it is a close, relative Vranus priscus, in order to have a more distinct size difference to the Hobbit. Both were real creatures though.

Thx! I drew this over the period of a month, gradually adding stuff. I do not know how many hours.

That is one amazing idea.

I like to imagine that at some time perhaps the two would have met, that swimming from island to island, V. priscus could have reached flores. Komodo dragons are capable of swimming fairly big distances, and the far bigger megalania should have been even better at doing that.

Thx. I initially wanted t draw a Komodo dragon and a Hobbit in a non fantasy setting, though this seemed a little boring so I settled on this. I think it is plausible that Hobbits or their relatives came into contact with very large Varanids. The Timor giant monitor was a god deal larger tha the Komodo dragon and not as far as mainland Australia. Giant piles of gold, gems and various easter eggs are anachronistic though
