Description A half moon rose over my shoulder providing the soft foreground illumination about twenty minutes after the sun had set. This is 6 equal exposures blended for focus. Each frame was shot at 2.8 to preserve the fixed stars.

Beautiful composition Colin, I'm blown away how well these elements in the foreground work with one another, each line leads to another line slightly deeper in the image, the tree acting as a fantastic transition from the foreground to the stars above. very well thought out, and very well executed!

Amazing!
Love that tree, it looks so dramatic, and the stars are subtle but really add to the overall impression of the piece <3

Haha, I dind't recognize your new image. Quite a change from your last - first looked like a nice bird, but this is like the bird just hit a car at 70mph.

oh it's a paw! didn't see it at first, but it still looks like bloody death.

anyway, glad ya like it! I wanted to do something different and had the halfmoon to balance the twilight. was a tough one though. had about 2 min.s when the illumination was in balance.

zephyrwolfen In reply to ColinHSillerud [2011-04-03 17:58:40 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha! Yeah, I'd had the same icon for so long that people didn't initially recognise me
And yeah, the paw's supposed to be fairly subtle - it's meant to be a bloody pawprint made by one of my Krovendrakk species

No problem at all, Colin <3 And you got the balance just perfect

The since the only stacking was for focus, the stars/background was all the same shot.

for the technique, i shot 5 exposures [i think], all at f2.8, 400iso, 30s and aligned them with PS's auto align tool, then masked in the portions of correct focus from each shot/layer.

wonderful capture mate

interesting approach in order to make the stars visible without pushing the ISO too high. how did you finally handle to stars in the exposure stack? i would expect to see star trails or even star copies if you don't mask out the stars for 5 exposures!?

phew, sounds like a lot of work
i thought you were making use of some sort of automatic focus-blending tool / plugin.

ColinHSillerud In reply to da-phil [2011-03-16 19:49:24 +0000 UTC]

this shot was actually pretty easy. 15 layers in a slot canyon on the other hand... yeah, i think there are plug-ins, but most of them are for speed, not precision. PS is the best for custom work that i've used so far.
