Description This was a big job, but I'm pretty darn proud of it.
A few weeks ago I put together my own design for Supergirl's costume (to go with the Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman designs I came up with at the end of last year. This might become a trend for me...) so this piece was essentially a road test for that design. I'm very happy with how it came out.

Also, strictly speaking, this is kind-of-sort-of a redraw of a piece from 2014, which itself was a direct redraw of a piece from 2007. There's like, layers to this. (Ha, Photoshop pun.)

Honestly, it just started off when I found the 2014 piece on my hard drive and just wanted to have a go at drawing a more dynamic looking flying pose, and a better 'cape in the wind', so I used Supergirl as the subject. As it turned out, I was so pleased with the sketch I basically thought "screw it, I'm gonna do the whole drawing", and here we are.

Fun facts about this piece:
- My Supergirl design is sort of a mashup between:
Post-Crisis Jamal Igle design (gold trims, bracelets, shorter boots, classic 'S', and [not shown] bike shorts under the skirt.)
The current Rebirth/TV designs (red skirt, covered midriff, partial gloves, simple pointed belt, tights
And a few of my own touches (shorter hair, two-toned blue body section.)
- As well as 'road test' for my Supergirl design, this was also a chance for me to try out some light and colouring techniques to try and make the lighting more striking.
- The clouds were a pain to get right, but I think I did okay. (I recommend this tutorial, it includes a link to the brushes used)
- I changed the setting from daylight (as in the previous two versions) to sunset because I thought it'd be more visually striking, plus, I love the warm colour palettes you can get out of a sunset.

I also made a step-by-step version here: colonel-stormie.deviantart.com…

[EDIT - 22/05/2018: I don't usually go back and change old pieces but it was pointed out to me that the eyes were a bit too far apart on this. I couldn't unsee it and I was too bothered by it to let it go so I went back and edited the face, moved the nose and right eye over and I think it looks a lot better now anyway!]
