I hope I'm not misunderstanding this, but I get the impression Marrow thought of them as friends. Or at least he saw Devin as someone he could count on... it's a bit sad

yeah. your getting it right. he started out working together with Devin as a partnership. a common goal. but he's all alone. So without realizing it himself he'd gotten pretty attached to Devin. He never thought about how he felt until now when he felt that he failed him a bit.
Then devin realizes how things are going and he's just stating the reality of it. still.. what exactly devin thinks is still unknown.

Things are serious
It's pretty fitting how it's daylight out and yet these two are in a very uncomfortable position right now. As nasty as they are, they get around better in the dark.

dundun. yeah. I feel like devin has a two sided personality. One kind happy weird one. and one darker more serious one that he kind of switches between.
