Description This is a commission for ’s Iwo Jima Class Assault Ship. Inspired by ’s concept of the TFS Challenger - [link] – that also went into designing the Resortation Class.

When I read the specs I had a challenge on my hands and at the same time had an idea how to proceed – I was inspired by the Prometheus from the new BSG, and worked from that.

The hard part was to make the ship look workable; it does not have Star Trek magical technology; so I went into how to make her work. The front areas are mass airlocks for the transfer and retrieval of subordinate craft and under the nose lays the launch rack for fighters, from there it evolved into this, which I am very proud of.

’s reaction showed I had got what was needed – something intimidating, bulky, strong, powerful and functional – that was great news! BTW check out his page when you can - full of good stuff!

Well love to hear your thoughts – and below are the specs of this impressive ship.

Enjoy!

Haha- as if those little Comet Class Gunships weren't enough to strike fear in the hearts of pirates and other ill-doers- now they have to

deal with the big bugger that carries those guys!! Not a good day for being a bad guy.

Must say this is probably my favourite design out of the three you made. It looks big and tough, and very functional by appearance; no magic,

as you said! I guess it's that it's big enough to carry enough payload to inflict a haymaker of damage without actually engaging the enemy,

per se, and it's tough enough to just absorb whatever is put its way.

The colour and shape of it really clarify it's concept; everything works!

Colourbrand In reply to I-Plexiglass [2013-07-31 15:58:15 +0000 UTC]

HURRAY!!! I am not surprised to be honest - I love this too. When I first started it, it was a struggle; the worst part was trying to make it seem both feesable, workable and sticking to 's requirements.

If one cannot do it right, one might as well not bother.

I am very proud how this came out despite being inspired by the Prometheus from nBSG. It became its own ship, it fufilled 's requirements and more, and it added more to what he wanted.

We have a saying at where I work - Form, Fit, and Function; and that is what I aimed for here.

I am very glad you get those vibes from this design sir - Thank you

I-Plexiglass In reply to Colourbrand [2013-08-08 00:39:15 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine; the design of the ship herself looked like it took a fair while, and wasn't an immediately easy start. It can be easy for the viewer

to forget the work that goes into a completed work, because the finished product is right there in front of them! It's an interesting thing.

Well that is the overall result you are going for, and the fact that you came there with at his pleasure is a clear indication that you did the right

thing. I feel that a little inspiration is okay if the start is rough, but if you can move ahead from the thing to prevent your work from becoming

an obvious or at least noticeable rip from the original, then something's been done wrong. I detected nothing of that, and the final is very strong.

The three Fs of ship design should be emphasized in schools! And not even just in ships, but in all sorts of things. A building 50 meters tall made

out of printer paper is obviously very flawed.

Cheers!

Man, them are BIIIIG engine bells! Not sure why but it sorta reminds me of some of the pre-production art from the old Black Hole movie

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to RobCaswell [2013-07-23 06:36:40 +0000 UTC]

I think its the blocky nature and squat look - combined with the spine that gives it that feel; strange I would normally agree on the engine bells but this is a whopper of a ship that needs a whopper of a set of legs

The Black Hole - back in the day when movies were movies - and not money-shitter franchises.

Thank you sir for your great words

Robbe25 In reply to Colourbrand [2013-07-17 17:12:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't exactly mean the colour scheme... just the whole construction. Might be the big hull that makes me think more of a cargo ship than an assault cruiser..

I'll try to be more active

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to Robbe25 [2013-07-18 20:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Well if you look at most assault ships they tend to be modified freighters - its only the colouring that gives it away - and the occasional gun.

Hey be available WHEN YOU WISH!!! No rush

Always a pleasure

Robbe25 In reply to Colourbrand [2013-07-18 21:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Thing is: I want to be more active, and I want to create more guns.. However, I have a regular job now (which in itself is a good thing), and when I come home in the evenings it's very hard to muster up the energy or even creativity to do something that requires real input (like PMG or even commenting; let's be realistic, you've got nothing to gain from me just saying "Good job"... not that you don't deserve that either way )

I really like the industrial look of this, reminds me of some Babylon 5 Earth ships which I love. I can also see the BSG Prometheus inspiration but it has been pulled off in such a way that it isn't purely a repaint of that design.

Colourbrand In reply to Majestic-MSFC [2013-07-12 05:10:00 +0000 UTC]

That is what I was going for - well seen sir; I wanted it to feel practical and the Prometheus was a perfect design to bounce off.
