Description Many sci-fi fans have a passion or liking for a certain ship in the genre – there are many that are iconic – The USS Enterprise, Blake Seven’s Liberator, Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon, or Gerry Anderson’s Eagle or Thunderbird 2.

Of course there are the obscure – X-Wings, Firefox, B5’s StarFury and such. Mine is strangely the Dove/Doppleganger from the only Gerry Anderson true film ever made: Journey to the far side of the sun.

For those who had never heard of this film, it is the story of the discovery of another planet on the opposite side of the sun to us; and appears capable of supporting life. To get there, an impressive ship is launched – think Apollo but way larger; and to get down to this planet was via this ingenious means. Alas in that Gerry Anderson sort of way, it all goes horribly wrong and results in everything blowing up

So why is it called Doppleganger? Check the movie yourself

I loved this ship ever since I clapped eyes on her; she is not a starfighter or capable of doing anything radical – she is just a shuttle. Yet something about it made sense and it looked rather impressive; it was sleek, fast, and looked cool; and also very technically accurate; no doubt based on the lifting bodies from the 1960’s.

However I was not keen on the colour, nor its propulsion systems, and the landing gear beggared belief – SKIDS?!

The original ship had two rocket type motors, two outer engines and two vertical jets. The design is sound but the mechanisms under her made no sense. It’s no surprise that this thing killed anyone who flew it.

So I did a version; the ship has two engines similar to the one the legendary X-15 carried, with internal chambers to funnel thrust through the outer engines which would bend down akin to the F-35 and hidden vertical thrusters. I gave it a shuttle colour scheme akin to the Dream Chaser, and gave the thing proper landing gear.

I also re-designed the symbol to make it look more impressive.

Like to hear your thoughts – and if anyone wants to do a 3D model – go nuts

Enjoy!

Have not seen the film. Your ship rendering looks downright sensible.

The original vessel is not like this - it's silver-grey with a black nose.

But still like it.

Ain't much of a film but give it a go

Cool ! Love that movie.

Jason Webb : We discover a NEW planet! In OUR OWN solar system! Military and scientific implications BEYOND comprehension! We ask our *friends*, for a *few* dollars, and it's "No Go!".

David Poulson : One *billion* dollars, Jason.

Jason Webb : Cheap at TWICE the price!

Yeah, it was a rather unique film - and I liked it because it was different and tragic - space is always seen as a flawless road - er, no; it can be dangerous too!!

Oh, and love the Avatar

Yep, was (and still am) a big fan of all things Anderson. They were all a major part of my childhood and really set me up for a life of sci-fi. And I loved the premise of this film as much as the models.

Thanks for rekindling the memory

Great picture as always, my friend. Nice job on the details. Even the tarmac has a used look ...

You never know what ship, or gizmo will catch your eye and become your favorite. For me it was the Eagle from space 1999. I mean my list of favorites is long and varied but the Eagle is my first love.

I really liked your version it is a nice piece of work. the little bits of exhaust for the vertical thrusters are a great detail to add

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to wbyrd [2013-03-02 08:30:06 +0000 UTC]

Well there ya go - something clicks, something entices, something makes one stay loyal

I am glad that the wisps of thrust work for you - I wanted to show VTOL without descending into OTT thrusts.

Thank you sir for taking time out to comment and visit

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wbyrd In reply to Colourbrand [2013-03-02 14:07:35 +0000 UTC]

No problem I thought the pic deserved a few words

If ya watch A Harrier or other vertical thrust craft that one thing you notice on take off the dust and air currents they generate on take off.
It's easier and quicker just to add some engine flares out the bottom I imagine so the extra time and attention to detail is appreciated by some of us.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to wbyrd [2013-03-02 16:44:26 +0000 UTC]

Exactly - that is what I wanted to get across - its truth.

Sides it looks more sensible - if a ship is burning all engines to get off the ground - something is seriously wrong

Thank you sir for your kind and supportive words

It's been a long time since I've seen this film. If I recall the ship seemed very much inspired by the NASA lifting bodies of the time? Unfortunately that's all I remember short of A re-watch Nice bit of nostalgia, all the same! I think some of my favorite ships are not exactly ones that rise to the top of everyone's list

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourbrand In reply to RobCaswell [2013-02-26 20:55:16 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! Some of the best are alien and thensome

It was and I still think lifting bodies are cool! I saw it recently and its interesting but original and bold; few films in the genre can claim that.

Thank you very much sir for coming by to comment always a joy
