Yep. I can see the bananas. Both of them.

I will!
I had a banana yesterday. You know how bananas get a little too ripe but you eat them anyway because they are good for you and if you eat them fast then you don't really notice how squishy they are. Besides they still taste ok, despite the texture. Well this banana I ate had gone a little further than that. It was not at all pleasant...

Wow, that's such intricate detail!

There's a beautiful symmetry to this, considering it's obviously not exactly the same on both sides. (Which recalls my least favorite grammar-school art criticism, "Did you draw that freehand?")
Any chance we'll see her colored?

Yes she's going to be coloured.
I want to do a better scan of her before I colour though. I want preserve the graphic quality of it.
I know about that particular criticism. Like it's either a bad thing that it exists in the 'real world' or that nobody can do that with out the help of technology and you must have cheated.

There's no real response you can make that won't be met with "Uhn-uh! You traced it with a ROO-ler!" But if you are patient and demonstrate your abilities under the critic's scrutiny, they may promise to be your best friend at recess.

Oh I loved it when those very new friends then solemnly promised to keep what ever you had created until you died. After which time they could see their investment paying a substantial dividend.

I think I'll start with the kid that always said "Stop drawing all the time!".

The appropriate grade-school response is, "I'll stop drawing when your face stops being ugly." Then to continue drawing.

Ha, he wasn't a very pretty guy either that would have been perfect. Had I actually the balls at the time. My usual response was to give him a dirty look and say "shut-up!" and then continue drawing.

But then you open yourself up to "I don't shut up, I GROW up! And when I look at you I THROW up! And..." etc. ad nauseum. Or even "'Shut up' means 'meet me at the waterbed in 10 minutes'!" Ahh, fond memories (not)

But... but the European phoenix is male!

True. But in some stories it lays an egg and then sets itself on fire.

Oh, okay then.
And in others, the fire produces a worm that then becomes a phoenix... myths can be weird.

Very strange. I had not heard the worm part. In another version the phoenix makes an egg out of myrrh and other special things, then the new phoenix comes from that after the old one dies. Makes a kind of sense when you think that european medieval scholars believed in spontaneous generation.

I think it's in one of the older versions - Pliny the Elder's or Aelian's, probably, though I'm probably wrong.
That said, european medieval scholars believed in a lot of weird things - sacrificial pelicans, self-castrating beavers, and buffalo with explosive flatulence.

I like the way that every animal has it's natural opposite. Elephants fought dragons, dolphins swim into the throats of crocodiles and choke them etc.
Don't forget the vegetable lamb!

'Tis all part of the natural order of things. This world is supposedly a reflection of the higher (or lower, as the case may be) holy and unholy worlds, and the conflict between angels and demons is mirrored.
Mmm... vegetable lamb.

The eastern phoenix is the female form of the dragon and the egyptian phoenix has long feathers over its eyes. I like both those ideas so I like to put them together.
