my prevailing theory is that Toph (over the course of her being a badass police chief) caught Lin using her earthbending to steal ... rather than arrest her Toph set her up to make an honest living and eventually Toph and Sokka adopted her
There are a couple reasons for this theory ... first and foremost being that TOPH AND SOKKA GOT MARRIED AFTER THE FINALE PERIOD END OF STORY ... lol
but seriously though ... Toph and Sokka were quite busy helping rebuild the world and assisting Aang with Republic City ... Sokka on the City Council and Toph running the Republic Police Metal-Bending Academy they would have likely held off having a child so they could each tend to their respective responsibilities
Also ... I have a feeling Toph would be hesitant to want a child for fear of them being blind as well ... this may sound like a lame excuse but think about it ... Toph's life wasn't an easy one and even though she may joke about it a lot her blindness is a real handicap ... even something as simple as eating can become a chore ... yes her earthbending helps to counteract the more detrimental asspets of it bt there's no guarantee that any child Toph had would wind up being an Earthbender and she would know that ... as has been established in the series Bending is not a genetic trait ... Katara birthed by two non-benders became a powerful waterbender while her brother became a non-bender ... also in The Fortune Teller there was a set of twins where one twin was an earthbender and the other wasn't
That being the case i can imagine Toph spend many a waking night fretting over her chances for motherhood ... I know it's a normal thing for a grown woman to desire children and with Toph's situation i'd be willing to bet the decision making process tore her up inside ... Then later finding a young earthbending girl on the street, maybe scamming some streetside gamblers out of their money ... it would be enough to move me to tears were i in her position ... to find a girl with so much potential at the same age Toph was when she ran from home
I know this isn't likely to be where Bryke is gonna go with this story (assuming they even bother to flesh it out) but until we're told otherwise this is going to largely be how i solve the Toph/Sokka/Lin family equation

the other night i came across the horrible realization that sokka can't be Lin's dad cuz lin and tenzin dated and if sokka was lin's dad they would be cousins. it just about crushed my life, I'm pretty sure i cried

lol they certainly are and in my opinion they're the best couple in the Avatar Universe ... i've been trying to convince myself that Lin is an adopted daughter but i'm finding this to be doubtful at best

How about if Sokka was Lin's Stepfather instead of father. Toph was married to someone before Sokka and had Lin with him. Does that cheer you up

I like uncle Sokka or step dad Sokka, but he can't be the real dad, because Lin dated Tenzin, who's Katara's son... that wouldn't work. But oh my GOD is Sokka an adorable father like figure!

I'm still hoping it's a possiblity. They were very clear to give absolutely no clear evidence of any parental lissues in the Yukone flashbacks, though there was plenty of implication for us optimistic veiwers.

You're right. Their were no clear signs of Sokka and Toph being together, but it definitely seemed like Sokka was doing his best to flatter Toph. Hmm, off topic, I wonder if the vision was two sided though. I mean what if it was meant to warn Korra as much about Amon as it was about Yukone?
