Description There are many old stories that have been passed along among foxes since before any fox‘s most distant ancestors could possibly recall. In fact, many foxes believe that these stories always existed, much like the world itself. As they are passed along, they often become distorted, altered by the personality of each fox whose mind they use as an agent of their dissemination. However, it is remarkable that, though the details of each legend may be altered, the underlying themes remain intact no matter how many times a tale may have been recounted. Perhaps it is because, given their more individualistic nature, the foxes have always tended toward more intimate fables, where emotional themes are paramount, as opposed to the epics of the wolves and the lewd and rowdy tales of the coyotes, both of which are much more reliant on specific details. Some of these stories are meant to impart moral advice, and others merely offer practical assistance. Yet many seem to exist for no other reason than to evoke emotional responses from their audience, a trait unique to fox-lore.

The following story, (which has been paraphrased, in order to serve simply as a reference for the reader) however does carry a moral message, warning against moments of cold-heartedness and greed.

A mated vixen and tod once lived together far in the northern reaches of the wild, ages upon ages ago. Both were good foxes, and lived as foxes should. However, the vixen was sometimes seized by fits of greed and selfishness, as many foxes are, and during these, she lost all her pity and compassion. During one particularly intense blizzard, she forced her mate from their earth, as she was indisposed to share her meal with him. When she emerged the next day, she found him dead, frozen by the vicious winds of the previous night. Realizing what she had done, she wailed to the sky in grief and regret. The winter wind heard her lament , and carried it beyond the borders of the world foxes knew and back again, to be heard whenever the icy gales shear through the air.

...

Yeah. Musing on the mythos of my fox-story. I just can't escape from all this mawkish nonsense. Gah.

As for the actual picture, I tried some of these odd watercolour pencils to 'aint' this, where you pencil in the colours and then spread them using a wet paint brush. Not really keen on how it turned out frankly. I think it needs to be on a larger scale to look good.

*looking down at you*that story might be older than you and I. My little fox friend and may I say that we sty unx (Vixden for Sky Fox) also have a very story that is older than the both of us and it goes: Ages ago two mated sty unx live in the mountains far to the east. these sty unx were good mates to one another as all mated couples, but like all mated couples go through good and bad days. on one cold day after the couple mated with each other. They had one such bad day and after a day of arguing the female drove her mate out of the den for reasons unknown. Her mate went off hunting with the couple's eldest daughter who's fur coat matches that of a swift fox. They were gone for three days and nights with on the dawn of the fourth day the eldest daughter comes limping into the den with her mate not in sight, and the eldest daughter herself all beaten up with the fur of her left front leg painted red with blood. when she asked her daughter where her mate was. The eldest daughter answered with an uneasy tone that she didn't know. Because that were separated when a great grizzly bear attacked them and severely injured her left leg, which the eldest daughter spent the next three days healing. After the hearing, the news of her missing mate. She and the pack went out to find him; except for her eldest daughter who is still nursing her wound as well as her mate to her company.  Five dawns they left the den... Five dust's they came back empty winged. Until they found what's left his mangled body at the bottom of a valley with his left wing ripped off of his body. she grieved for him ever day untie her death when she gave birth to her and her mate's last letter of kits.

It's got a very interesting backstory, sympathetic characters, powerful emotions and a simple message. Excellent job, why didn't I think of this?

Thanks. I've tried them once more, but usually they come as an afterthought. I should really plan out a picture where I intend to use them from the start. I should get better results that way.

You mighta gone a little thick on the penciling and a little thin on the brushing, too. In my experience with those things, the water spreads them out pretty well. Besides, watercolor is meant to be subtle anyway.

Yeah. I lost a lot of detail with the paint because of the size of the whole picture, so the pencil was all I could really use. I need to find some large paper or canvas to try this stuff on. And some actual paints.
