he was a Chilean artist, who joined the Surrealist group in the 1950's. around that time the Paris Surrealists were pretty well disintegrated, split up because of different artistic visions and interpersonal problems that happen in groups ... leader Breton was promoting Matta, most likely as part of an attempt to keep his group in the limelight.
Matta is an amaaaaazing painter (well, he amazes me), his works are interesting abstract sci-fi looking things. he's one of my personal favourites, and i had no idea how many people are inspired by (or fans of) his work until i joined deviantart.

Hell yeah!!!! i totally love Matta, he is one of my favourite artists. i smiled when i read this comment, it is great to see you found a connection, and i take it as a real compliment.
funny, when i was looking through your work i was going to write you a comment saying that one of the watercolour + photomanipulation pieces resembles Matta (seriously, this really happened about 2 minutes ago)... then i came back and checked this message and see you wrote the same thing to me.
personally, i am really a bit surprised that you see Matta connection in this work out of all the ones i posted, because i have never seen him do something so recognizable. damn, one of the greatest art-related moments in my life was seeing a 25 foot long painting by him in person, it was really an amazing experience. thanks for getting me all nostalgic, and thanks for all the very nice comments and adds.
