I'm assuming that even though they /had/ the money to pay for his medications and hospitalization, they didn't /want/ to pay for them, so they thought it would be more convenient to put him down. They also thought that if they paid the vet for care, he wouldn't survive for very long anyway, so it would essentially be "Paying $1000 to have a cat killed." For that reason they wanted to let him die 'naturally' at home, not realizing that he would be suffering in extreme pain and experiencing seizures until he died. Fortunately, they were very wrong about his life expectancy, and after being put on several medications and a new food, the kitty will live for many more years! :3
