Description Did you ever feel like your hand was possessed or like you were channeling some rare depth to your own skill you didn't even know existed? After drawing Belle not so long ago, I got myself into a Disney obsession. Without any warning, Ariel became the second product of that.

The Little Mermaid is in fact a tragedy as it was originally written (compared to Disney). In both versions though, Ariel did save Eric from a shipwreck and did fall for him. This drawing is meant to take place somewhere between his rescue and her choice to accept help from the Sea Witch. When she can swim without being seen, she surfaces behind a rock and watches the illuminated windows of her Prince's castle hoping to catch a glimpse of him again only to realize that she wouldn't be able to do anything if she did. In all honesty I most definately prefer the fairy tale ending Disney so beautifully presented.

It took me a very long time to finish this picture and I dare say that it may very well be one of my best works yet. I'm most especially happy with Ariel's skin tone and the varying changes to the lighting on her. But regardless of this, as always I ask that if anyone sees a fault or something that I could do better. Please tell me!

I must also thank for the use of such a wonderful collection of star brushes.

Beautiful concept and colors. If there is something i have to point out, it's the kind of coloring you are using in each element of the picture, some are more realistic than others, for ex., the sky looks more like a real sky, but the moon looks more simple and with just some gradients. Also, the shading on ariel is difuse, it doesnt tell much about it's volume. Something that I feel has helped me with volume is doing just cell shading (flat colors). I'd recommend drawing all the scene with the same level of abstaction (like all looking cartoony, all using same kind of line) so you know exactly where to place the shadows. Hope u get what i mean, and hope it helps

Wow...I was almost thinking DA had forgotten I existed. This is the first comment I've recieved in over a month! Thank you so much for taking the time to offer a critique.

I realize I did get a little away from myself with some of the coloring, the moon in particular turned out so much brighter and apparent than I had ever wanted but I didn't know how to dim it down without taking away from a semi-realistic look. With the exception of Ariel's face I was shooting for a very realistic look throughout the whole image but well that obviously fell through some. Ariel's shading also got a little tricky. Originally I had wanted to draw Eric's palace reflecting in the water but everything seemed so dark and I didn't know how best to distort the reflection in the waves that I left only the light of the palace on her face. When the moon was placed in I suddenly had two light sources that I liked but I didn't know how best to use them. I do understand what you're saying about the colors...I think...but the biggest culprit in this drawings results I think are that I was adapting and changing while working on it. I'll put a alot more focus and thought into it next time.

Thank you so much again!!
