I have to admit, I am so proud of this map. I have always loved maps, and I daydreamed a lot about this one. After hours of planning, calculations and research (and money on my stable owners' part ), I am finally finished! But I would still appreciate critique on my farm design from anyone who is knowledgeable about horse farms.

Climax Stables is located in southern Ontario, Canada, less than two hours' drive from Toronto.
The numbers on the map correspond to the following features:

1. Main Entrance: a gravel driveway lined by maple trees leads from the public road to the main barn, arenas, office, and owners’ residence.
2. Office: an old stone gatehouse converted into the office where Climax Stables’ business is conducted.
3. Owners’ Residence: a two story stone house that was converted from an 1870s coach house. The house is at the top of a hill, and overlooks the broodmare pastures. It is currently home the Westward family.
4. Soccer field, dog agility course, swimming pool, playground, tree house, vegetable garden: these recently added features are used by the Westward children, their dogs, and visiting friends.
5. Main Barn and Indoor Arena: the brand new main barn is modern, bright and well-ventilated. It houses 16 horses. The east side of the barn joins with the indoor arena, which is 100x250 feet and has sand footing.
6. Outdoor Arena A: 160x300 foot arena with sand footing. Permanent seating on the north side can accommodate 200 people.
7. Outdoor Arena B: 66x197 foot sand arena.
8. Outdoor Arena C: 66x197 foot sand arena.
9. Cross Country Field: not a true cross country course, but a place to introduce horses and riders to different cross country obstacles.
10. Paddocks for show horses
11. Stallion Barn and Breeding Shed: the stallion barn has stalls for 10 stallions and a state-of-the-art breeding facility.
12. Stallion Paddocks
13. Stallion Pastures
14. North Pasture: mainly used for show horses.
15. The Battlefield: pasture mainly used for show horses.
16. Yearling Paddocks
17. Yearling Barn: this 12-stall barn is the perfect place for future race and show horses to mature.
18. Three Tree Pasture: pasture for yearlings.
19. Cimarron Pasture: pasture for yearlings.
20. Broodmare and Foal Paddocks
21. Broodmare and Foaling Barn: the barn has 8 large stalls for broodmares and foals, plus foaling stalls.
22. Foothill Pasture: pasture for broodmares.
23. Big Pasture: pasture for broodmares.
24. Herron Lake: with a small beach and dock, the lake is perfect for swimming. Picnics are often held under the trees on the surrounding grassy hills.
25. Starmore River: this shallow, rocky river winds through the center of the property in a leafy ravine.
26. Wildcat Island: a heavily forested island about a quarter of an acre in size.
27. Racehorse Paddocks
28. Racehorse Barn: accommodates 12 horses in large, airy stalls with easy access to the training tracks, hotwalker, round pens, and paddocks.
29. Dirt and Turf Training Tracks: The dirt track is 5 furlongs, and has a new turf track inside it, both of which are ideal for starting young racehorses and conditioning older ones. Equipped with a four-horse starting gate and a covered viewing area for spectators.
30. Graduated Turf Training Track: this turf track is approximately a mile long and winds up and down the side of Spectre Hill. The up- and downhill intervals are perfect for building horses’ stamina and speed.
31. River Pasture: pasture for resting or recuperating racehorses.
32. Far Pasture: pasture for resting or recuperating racehorses.
33. Storage garages: buildings to store machinery, feed, bedding, manure, and vehicles.
34. Back Driveway: provides access to the storage garages from a public road.
35. Staff Residence: A series of cottages for staff in residence.
36. Staff Residence: a large house for staff in residence.
37. Spectre Hill: a forested hill that stretches from the Cimarron Pasture to the Far Pasture, and is covered in forests of maple, pine, and beech trees. Riding trails, many with optional obstacles such as streams and jumps, wind over the hill. From the top of the hill, all of Climax Stables’ property can be seen.
38. Unicorn Grove: this grassy grove with a small stream running through the center is a favourite spot of children riding the trails because of its magical appearance.
39. Ruins: the ruins of an 1850s stone mansion. Now only the outer walls and foundations remain, but it is a favourite trail ride destination and bonfire site.
40. Turkey Vulture Tree: A dead tree, now inhabited by turkey vultures, that marks the western peak of Spectre Hill.

Very, very interesting! My employer is currently developing 1,000 acres in east central Texas, phase I and II of which will be somewhat like the Serenby community in Georgia and somewhat an equestrian-friendly single family residential development, with individual paddocks and lots of riding trails.

What software did you use to create this map?

CopperdragonArt In reply to Dark-Lemur [2011-09-06 21:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Wow, that's really exciting, and it sounds like it be a great place once it's finished.
I used Adobe PhotoShop Elements 5.0 to make my map, but I wouldn't recommend it for map making. This progam does not have a tool to make curved lines, so I had to draw all the fencelines, buildings, etc. by hand. It was a tedious process. The other problem is Elements 5.0 has no way to measure distance on the canvas, so it's difficult to make things to scale. I believe the newer versions of PhotoShop have line making tools and rulers more suited to map making. I don't know of any ideal software, but I bet there is some software designed for cartography that would be best for business purposes.

Well, right now I'm bouncing around between AutoCAD, ArcMap 10, and Gimp: AutoCAD for the fine-tuning, ArcMap for presentation and market analysis, and Gimp to take the ArcMap .jpgs and pretty them up for our brochures. Not necessarily tedious, but complicated x.x

I like GIMP a lot and I do use it to suplement Elements sometimes, except that my tablet doesn't work in GIMP. If only we could combine all our programs, things would be so much easier.

This is so cool!
I've been wanting to do one of these for my farm as well. About how long did this take you? I'm guessing you had to research too
Very well laid out farm, you seem to have everything you need! Great job

Thanks! You should do one. I love seeing what peoples' farms are like. I don't know exactly how long it took me, because I sketched out several test layouts before I settled on this one. But once I chose a layout, the art probably took about five or six hours. Before I drew anything though, I spent at least 25 hours researching what facilities I needed by reading books and websites, looking at real farms on Google Earth to see good examples, and measuring out how much land I needed.
Thanks again!

This is such a huge map. You have a detailed farm! It looks so realistic, it's almost overwhelming. It looks like you had lots of fun making it.

CopperdragonArt In reply to peanutbutterpuppy [2011-09-04 13:35:08 +0000 UTC]

I didn't mean for it to be so huge, but once I researched how much pasture they need to feed the horses and to rest the pastures so the grass stays healthy, I realized it would have to be several hundred acres. Sometimes I think I make things a little too realistic...but I enjoy it a lot, so whatever.
Thanks!

I think it's good this way! It's kind of shocking to find out how much land is necessary. But if it's necessary, it's necessary.
You're welcome!

Wow, this is amazing! I love the details. And, it's so big! It seems so realistic! The owners of Climax stables must be wealthy, to own all this property!

This map is great! I love all the details you drew into the buildings and how you did those little flowers, and cross country jumps. You have lots of property around the barns and facilities, which is great!

I really need to get started on my map.
