Description 7 shot vertical panorama showing the smoke of the White Draw fire 6 miles east of Edgemont, South Dakota. From this vantage point the fire is roughly 1/2 to 3/4 mile from the road. it was started when an RV caught fire and stopped on the eastbound side of the road. (which is the side of the road this was taken on) High winds made the fire jump the road into the pasture to the north and into the tree filled canyons.

I've also posted a news story about the fire and the loss of a C-130 fire fighting tanker which crashed near this fire and is from the Daily Republic newspaper in Mitchell, South Dakota:

SD fire slows, but toll includes tanker crash

The Associated Press - EDGEMONT, S.D.

An overnight thunderstorm slowed the advance of a wildfire in southwest South Dakota, bringing a moment of respite just hours after an air tanker fighting the blaze crashed with six people aboard.

The White Draw Fire on Monday was holding steady at about 6 1/2 square miles, about 30 percent contained, fire spokesman Brian Scott said. The storm didn't bring much rain but high humidity caused grasses to burn slower, and fire activity was "really subdued," he said.

No people or livestock had been harmed by the fire that was sparked by a vehicle Friday afternoon in the Edgemont area, about 80 miles southwest of Rapid City. However, an Air Force C-130 plane crashed while fighting the fire on Sunday.

David Eaker of the Great Basin Incident Management Team said six people were aboard, but no other information was immediately released. Capt. Ruth Castro, a spokeswoman for U.S. Northern Command at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, said the plane had been flying from that base. An Air National Guard official in North Carolina said the plane's home base was Charlotte.

Three people were retrieved from the wreckage and taken to a Rapid City hospital, the Fall River County Sheriff's Office told the Rapid City Journal. Calls to the sheriff's office Monday morning were referred to Northern Command, which did not comment on the report.

A U.S. Forest Service official in Colorado offered sympathy to the crew members' families.

"We grieve your loss," said Jerri Marr, supervisor of the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, where some C-130s were fighting a wildfire last week. She did not elaborate.

Eight Air Force C-130s can be equipped to drop water or fire retardant. They're flown by Air Force National Guard units at Port Hueneme, Calif.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Cheyenne, Wyo.; and a Reserve unit in Colorado Springs, Colo.

All eight had been dispatched to Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs last week to fight Colorado wildfires. The C-130 can drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds, covering an area one-quarter of a mile long by 100 feet wide, and can be refilled in less than 12 minutes, according to the Defense Department.

Castro said the tanker on the White Draw Fire made at least two drops of retardant Sunday before crashing at about 6 p.m.

The fire was burning mainly on U.S. Forest Service land although residents of five homes in the area were given voluntary evacuation orders over the weekend.

Steep terrain, rattlesnakes and hot, dry weather challenged the 181 people battling the fire. The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures in the 90s through the end of the week.

Frank Maynard, Fall River County's emergency management director, described the terrain as "very, very rugged, straight up and straight down cliffs."

"You could take a vehicle in there if you wanted to get rid of the vehicle when you're done," he said.

Maynard referred questions about the crash to Northern Command. He said he was focused on firefighting, trying to knock down a couple of hundred-acre fires ignited by lightning strikes from Sunday's thunderstorm.

"We are bone dry," he said. "We get anything that is an ignition source and we've got off-and-running fires."

Scott said ranchers with cattle close to the fire perimeter had moved them out of harm's way, but "it's really sad, the grass resources being lost out there."

"We're doing everything we can to limit that loss of grass," he said. "That's critical to ranchers out there."

It happens We go through cycles of drought--the last one here was 10 years or so ago and we had wildfires all over the west. It's sad about the loss of life for sure--both in firefighters and people caught in the fires. Homes can be rebuilt...people are harder to replace

It was a pretty intense fire--lots of dry grass and dry timber to feed it. It's finally out after a 3 inch rainfall.

Good image John! Definitely looks dry
Hope last night's at least helped to knock down the fires some... or at least get them where they can be "contained"

I came acorss the hill where this fire was burning last night while it was raining--the rain was coming down in torrents--like Gaod decided he's had enough of the fires here and turned on the firehose. Right across to the north of the spot where the fire started you could see the gen set work lights where they are doing recovery and analysis of the C130 crash. It's about 1/2 to 3/4 mile to the north of the road.

Thanks Alice

Did the actually manage to knock down the fires any? Wildfires can be pretty persistant... and we all know that it can take a LOT of water to actually put out a fire

Well, lets put it this way--the fire camp in edgemont was taking down it's tents and equipment was moving out to other places. Edgemont was one of the places that got 2-4 inches of rain. I'm sure there will be a mop up crew in place for a while there.

The Oil Creek fire northwest of Newcastle, Wyoming--the largest of the fires here at 88,000 acres--is another area that got 2+ inches of rain.

Yeah--it does that to a person, Linda. Since I've lived here in the Black Hills I've seen hundreds of thousands of acres burn--it saddens me. I know that in my lifetime those areas will not recover Thanks my firend

I didn't write the article below, you know--it's an AP news story but I couldn't find the authors name.

THanks Mariette I suppose you'd hear in the Netherlands if NYC was burning or something like that. Forest fires like these aren't really globally newsworthy--except in the case of the Colorado Springs fire where 360 houses were burned maybe. I thought CNN would pick up on this fire because of the C130 air tanker crashing and the loss of life--they did but not very long and they didn't even get the name of the town nearby right--Robin Meade called the town EdgeWOOD instead of EdgeMONT Anyway, thanks for the interest my friend

Thanks Dennis. It's late August dry in early July and been that way for a while. It's probably drier where you are though. As much as I love me thunderstorms I sure wish it would just cloud up and rain monsoon style for a couple weeks from California to Missouri and Texas to north Montana.

my best guess is without relief we start burning late july and august. we had the spring rains this year. it looks to me more "ranched" land isn't ranched. that which used to be hayed or grazed is growing scrub trees and 2 ft of grass from spring rains which is starting to turn to brown. we're starting our fuel pile up.

windy and around 100 is the lose forecast for the next 14-21 days.

there's a small chance of some hurricane bounty next week.

alol on a sidenote; the weather is my life.

I hope you don't have the fraggin' little firebug arsonists we seem to have around here. At least 2 of the current fires were set and one of those burned one of my favorite lake spots to shoot

Been seeing these fires on our news. Having been in the middle of a terrible bushfire as a child I can say its something that lives in your memory forever. The roaring noise, the heat, the devastation of both lives and property and the aftermath of all the destruction is something that I feel with and for all those going through it now. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Corvidae65 In reply to SilEnigmaArts [2012-07-04 02:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Yup--you folks know about this kind of thing for sure, Karla. There was a bushfire there not too long ago if I remember right. I remember a viral video of a firefighter that found a burned koala cub and gave it water. I'm sorry you had to go through one yourself. It had to be a scary thing to experience. Closest I've come to a huge fire is a couple of wheatfield fires--which a field of ripe wheat burns like gunpowder and makes a noise like a tornado. I shall add my thoughts and prayers to yours my friend

SilEnigmaArts In reply to Corvidae65 [2012-07-04 05:07:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes true...those were the bushfires in Victoria. For a wild animal to allow a human to hand feed it water was proof of how desperate this little burnt creature was at the time. Unfortunately the little koala died

Awww...That's too bad about the koala and about the whole darned fire in general--those fires burned ofr what seemed like ages and a lot of people and homes were lost in it.

Yes, there are so many and more are springing up every day it seems. There is a new fire to the north of the White Draw Fire between Custer, South Dakota and Newcastle, Wyoming...2 homes were lost so far but no one injured. Compared to what folks are going through in Colorado we just have a campfire to contend with though. We best hope that no fires get going in the pine beetle kill areas here or in Colorado or they will burn until it snows

It's sad...I feel for the families of the air crews. We still don't know what happened to bring the plane down. Maybe never will. For now all the C130s are grounded--which is bad news indeed for fire crews everywhere but they have to be air worthy and safe and I agree with that decision.
