Description

Before all the ages common folk were blessed to survive, Hiraeth and the Fae Realm awoke from the same cradle. The wild yet soothing calls of magic riled them from their sleep, and together they formed a waking world. If Hiraeth were a canvas, then the Fae Realm would be paint: raw colour shaped and smeared at a whim and, with more paint, old things can be covered and seen as new, even though the old image hides underneath. No matter what form a Fae decides on, their soul will always be the same. Within the Fae Realm’s inland seas and saltwater forests are islands of sandy hills and warped mountains that look like cracked egg shells nestled together but forgotten by whatever hatched from them. In these jagged, rocky shells are walls of geodes and blooming forests where the Zinzuteka make their home far away from the rest of the realm. To a Hiraeth traveller, they may look odd and monstrous, but they are more fond of speech and relaxation than fighting. They live peacefully amongst each other and often spend hours chatting or meditating together, indulging every minute they have simply but with care. Meditating with them is said to allow one to peer into the Dreaming Plane, where the Zinzuteka carefully observe and then debate on meaning or regail each other with the sights they saw once they have awoken.

The Zinzuteka were once the followers of a great Fae Lord known as the Singer of Gentle Songs, who founded the Egg Shell Islands and practiced their fondness for music in the reverberating mountains. The Zinzuteka and others were the first Fae who were initially lured by the Singer’s music, but then stayed to become a part of her chorus and help her tend the flora of the islands. Her goal was to merely learn all the stories of the all the worlds and turn them into magical ballads. While the Zinzuteka were not necessarily singers themselves, they traveled on her behalf to acquire stories, often visiting Hiraeth, sometimes disguised to speak with the people and other times just being themselves to chat with beasts or to commune with spirits. The Singer of Gentle Songs only wanted to bring harmony to the realms, but eventually an off-shoot of Fae Lords became greedy and began their march on Hiraeth, instigating other interlopers to prey on the weak and fuel the storms of suffering. The Zinzuteka worked with whichever Fae opposed this siege— masters of illusion and phantasmagoria normally used to enhance their story telling, they honed this power into a dangerous spear that could pierce the mind and temporarily send their foes into a state of mania or unquestioning fear as fragmented images tormented them. They also used their abilities to trap victims in surreal mazes, breaking their will before they even had a chance to fight. The Singer of Gentle Songs hated to see this power used as a weapon but forgave the Zinzuteka, as it was her whim for them to fight. Grief-stricken by the conflict, the Singer left the Fae Realm and descended into the Deep Realm, where she now goes by a different name. She and the Zinzuteka still talk through hushed dreams and they often use the magic steeped into their mountain home to hear the echoes of her old performances. The Zinzuteka have continued to visit Hiraeth after the conflict, finding immense joy in speaking with both folk and beast when they can if a conversation can be held.

I love these creatures. They look like the madness you'd expect from the Fae Realm, but they're just peaceful conversationalists. I'd chill and have a chat with one.
