Description

Even if they do not remember the entirety of their past, the folk of Hiraeth persist forward. Cataclysms and scourges have threatened the world time and time again, and though the tides were turned and the world was left standing, these events do not leave the world unscathed. While Hiraeth is considered a peaceful place, one must never forget the dangers hiding in dark places. This is never more apparent then during the months of autumn, when the veils hiding in-between places are thinner than normal, giving cause for demons, ghosts and other odd beings to haunt the wilds and throw parades down less traveled roads. Many come together to revel in risks and celebrate the fine line between life and death before winter’s grasp takes its toll. An incredible oddity, always scuttling about the realms but much easier to find in the chill of an autumn evening is a Sornupace— a beast who crawls on the curtains of reality, usually invisible but showing itself when the ties between realms teeter for a prolonged time. The shifting nature of realms is hazy and nebulous, but in spots where gateways are about to open is where a Sornupace will be, but they skitter off once a tear has been made, living forever at a crossroads but choosing to go up into the sky or down into the earth instead of committing to a solid road.

Sornupace have a strange role to play for those who seek it out. As large as a sturdy and homey caravan wagon (and playing a somewhat similar purpose), they can be very jarring to see, especially as their many jagged legs scuttle by. The Sornupace meanders about until the magical tides shift too hard in one realm’s favour, which is when they flee, but until that point they are easily approachable. The forlorn, the martyrs, and those with dark intentions look for the Sornupace and carefully place themselves inside its maw. This is as sacrificial as it looks, but not for the obvious reasons. The body of the Sornupace is hollow, and going inside one is more analogous to stepping on board a carriage than into a proper beast’s stomach. The Sornupace itself has sometimes even been called a “Nightmare Carriage”, as they send whoever is inside them into a deep sleep as they whisk them away to the most dire, dangerous, and disturbing places in Hiraeth. Old coven swamps, cursed hunting grounds, haunted kingdoms, bleak tundras, whirring lands of steel, toxic sanctums, and giant lairs are just a few of the macabre places one may end up if they decide to ride in the Sornupace’s belly. No one is sure why they do this, but some seek these places willingly— it is believed the darkest of places hold the keys to Hiraeth’s history, which has been lost or hidden away from common folk. Theoretically, the Sornupace could take one straight to the end of their journey, but their route is one that must be taken alone, with little respite and a fraction of a chance for victory. If one stays inside the Sornupace and gently strokes their inside rather then crawling out, then the Sornupace is said to take them on a tour of their morbid destination, letting them view an unseen world completely protected, but unable to interact or take anything back with them. Once their rendezvous is over, the rider will fall back asleep and wake up wherever the Sornupace originally picked them up. It is either the noblest or the nefarious among folk who seek the Sornupace, but neither is likely to be heard from again. In detailed accounts left behind by litches, it is said that a unique bell can be made of an amalgam of Hiraeth, Fae Realm, and Deep Realm metals. If one stands at a crossroads, lights a candle for every path, and rings this sacred bell, a Sornupace will come, as ready as a stagecoach to take you to places the world wishes to forget.
