Description

The Fae are a storied people, known for their ability to shape form as they please, and living in a reality with fewer laws than most. It can be hard for a Fae to grapple with the common problems that afflict the people of Hiraeth, which led some Fae to gain an unwarranted sense of superiority in their ignorance. What many Fae forget is that their world would still be a chaotic maelstrom without the aid of Hiraeth during her spiritual awakening. The Fae Realm was once seen as a meaningless place, where rogue magics fought over a nebulous, unattainable victory, cycling into madness. Spectres from this time still linger in the crevasses and forgotten nooks of the Fae Realm— the primeval Fae known as Mana. Their bodies billow and writhe in a whimsical display, like smoke being carried off by the wind. No two mana look the same, and no mana looks the same for long as their bodies keep forming and reforming. Fae souls are made of Mana, and seeing some of it still running wild and unconfined is said to strike an instinctual fear within every Fae.

Mana is the source for all Fae, but without the ingenuity and creativity that they are known for, they live simply to hunt and cause havoc. Their presence turns magic unstable, often increasing potency but to the point that it can be painful to cast— barriers tightening around one’s limbs, augmentations digging into the skin, and elements bursting as soon as they pass from one’s body. Some Fae Lords have been known to try to control Mana to bolster the strength of their armies, but many of these attempts have eventually turned against them. Out of arrogance or desperation some still try, even though the practice is frowned upon. Mana, willingly or otherwise, strive to join and consume one another, growing larger and more intense in the process, and the more they take in the stronger their gluttony grows. Outcasts from the past, most of remaining Mana live far away in the Fae Realm’s obscure corners, but if they manage to break out of their mindless stupors, they may begin looking for Fae to consume. Once it comes into contact with Fae society, it will most likely be chased away or banished into a less powerful form, but in very rare cases these roving Mana beasts can be turned into a proper Fae. Normally Fae are made from two Fae combining parts of their soul to form what would be considered an offspring of the two individuals, or a supremely strong Fae separating parts of their own soul, but a powerful, kindhearted Fae can lull life out of voracious Mana, the same way the original Fae were born countless generations ago. One must meet the rampaging Mana in a duel, but have the control not to harm them, and coax them with the right words. Though deadly and arduous, it is possible that brilliant new souls can still be pulled from the chaos that remains from the dawn of time.

I love that you used the idea of mana, the life force of all things or raw magical power, and made it into a living creature that's the wild, primitive version of a Fae.
