Description

Bringer of soft rime and freezing dew drops is the Pakalona, an elusive beast with a magical spring in their step. Their bodies are constantly radiating with cold, having minor affects in the areas they make their home, but never resulting in any environmental upheaval unless they are forced into a rage. They are docile, but skittish by nature, said to only be approachable by the innocent and pure of heart, creating tales of young maidens riding on their back at midnight or lost children being rescued and brought home by the auspicious creature. The reverence they carried wasn’t acknowledged by all, and many tried to hunt after the creatures for their pelt and horns, but the Pakalona is not a meek target to fall to common trickery. Armour plating on their legs, shoulders, and back often snaps regular weaponry, and rising out from their shoulder blades are wing-like appendages made of frost magic, which spread icy dander for the Pakalona to manipulate. With this powder, they can create spears of cold out of the wind, as well as pour it outwards in great gusts to buffet enemies away and spread a dire chill throughout their body. These silken wings can wrap around the Pakalona’s body to protect them from magical barrages, and though they cannot fly outright, they can drape them backwards like a lordly mantle which, when fluttered, let them leap and bound to astonishing heights or across incredible distances. When struck with fire or fire magics, the Pakalona’s frost turns into water, but this doesn’t stop their assault, and their enemies find themselves facing down slicing jet streams in the air or deluges dropped upon them until the Pakalona refreezes their aura. Rarely used unless in close combat, the Pakalona can also channel their frigid dust with their tail, harnessing it into strikes that can freeze their opponents still for a short time. Unfortunately, many of these fights spread the Pakalona’s magic too far into the wilderness, creating out of place cold snaps that might put them at odds with spirits. During these duels, the Pakalona often fled or had to restrain themselves in hopes of a sprite or spirits coming to their aid.

Pakalonas originated in the southern tundra mountains and the dry forests beneath them, occasionally exploring the neighbouring highlands and savannahs of the south, which is why their magic could be damaging to the land around them. Spirits acknowledged this unfairness, and often would keep an extra eye on them, their presence adding to the mysticism of their folklore. Their confined existence changed with the creation of the Great Betwixt, a ravine spanning the world filled with volatile magic. While some Pakalona remain in their homeland, small groups of them headed into the Betwixt and flourished. While they are still somewhat of a rarity, they have been seen across the entirety of the Betwixt and have even moved northward into snowy mountains and islands off in the Silver Sea, as they easily jumped and skipped across the icy ocean. The already frozen north and the magically saturated ravine allow the Pakalona to express themselves entirely, and make them incredibly more dangerous if one chooses to aggravate them. They graze from ice touched flower petals and fungi as well as pluck gemstones unearthed in the magical rivers of the Betwixt, adding to their arcane potency. The ice crystals they leave behind on flora and stone can be saved in an air-tight vial and used in alchemy or as simple ingredient. A single crystal is said to turn drinks sweet and refreshing, and when added to potions or medicinal balms, it sends a shock of cold through the body that eventually settles, and gives one an incredible resistance to ice magics and natural cold for a long time. Pakalona fawns are said to be born during the winter, but those born in the deepest northern wastes have a dark azure coat and wield incredibly deadly frost that is said to be able to freeze and strike at one’s soul while it still rests in the corporeal body.
