Description

Despite the Great Betwixt being a relatively new mark on Hiraeth's landscape, the beasts of the world have proved to be quick to adapt. These changes go beyond land, as the ravine continues into Tethys, transitioning into the ocean through gateways found near the northeastern wetlands and the southwestern canyons. Lording over the underwater gorge are the Bayarung-- once primal beasts with only cunning and brute strength, they were on the decline until the Betwixt revitalized their species. Feasting on the plentiful fish and other creatures that are attracted to the radiant magic, they, in turn, took in this power.

Bayarung have become completely loyal to the ravine and migrate along its pathways, stopping in parts of the sea to spread out and hunt, diving down into the crevasse when they need to recoup or if they want to temporarily bolster their magical strength. They have been known to come ashore to sunbathe and explore, usually satisfying this need on obscure islands and archipelagos, but on occasion they have been known to wander onto Hiraeth's proper shorelines. Though they follow the ravine, they are more commonly seen near the southwestern edges. Some believe this signals that they may have once been a part of western ocean spirit Naga's sea beast fleet, one of Tethy's primary lines of defence before her avatar disappeared.

Bayarung are deadly on both land and sea, more than capable of lashing out with raw force. Thanks to all the strange fish oils they consume, they can spew out chaotic magic in the form of geysers from their maw or as a billowing cloud that drifts towards their victims. The shimmering vapour they breathe is unstable, the magical energy sparking out every kind of element imaginable, though the Bayarung is unable to control what deadly concoction will emerge from their belly. Just being near this potent liquid has been known to make the magically sensitive sick. If the neck of the Bayarung is struck or if a magical blast can be shot inside their mouth, there is a chance their alchemical breath will burst inside them, the pain usually being enough to drive them away. If enough magic is used in a fight with a Bayarung, there is also a small chance of accidentally creating a rift into the Fae Realm, which creates a good window to escape being eaten but most likely will send their quarry on an entirely new adventure.
