That aft deck really ruined her looks

Yes it did and the taller funnels with those odd caps didn't help either. I went on her at the 1961 Navy Days when she was nearly new and I thought then she was one of the handsomest warships afloat. sadly I never saw HMS Lion which stayed as original.

Good composition Andy, and a good view of the Tiger but its started me thinking (always a bad sign) was this the last class of ship that was designated as a Cruiser. How long was she laid up for before disposal 10 years ?

Hi Mick, thanks for faving. Yes, the Tigers were our last class of cruiser unless you count the Invincibles which were originally classed as 'Through deck cruisers' to get the financial OK from Parliament. Tiger was laid up from 1979 to 1986 with failed attempts to sell her abroad so 7 years laid up and I think she was one of the longest to be put out to grass in Fareham Creek.

I had not counted the Invincible Class as there numbers began with a "R", so is there much difference in size between the Tiger and the Type 45 Destroyers ?

Yep the Tiger class were much bigger than the 45s. 12,000 tons as against 8,500 tones andΒ 555 feet overall as against about 500 on the destroyers. I think with the new technology they can pack more weaponry into a smaller hull.

Thanks for the information Andy, i was just reading yesterday that the RN ships will be without an anti ship missile from 2018 when the Harpoon missile is withdrawn from service. Β
