Description
This is a close-up of the 'Balao' class boat USS Becuna (SS319) alongside Dewey's USS Olympia in the Independence Seaport Museum, Philadelphia, on April 24, 2018. Like most of her sister boats, Becuna is named after a species of fish. In World War Two she undertook five war patrols between 23 August 1944 and 27 July 1945 and was awarded four battle stars. In 1950/51 she was converted to GUPPY 1A configuration, GUPPY standing for the Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program. Becuna's conversion was not as extensive as that of Clamagore (see my gallery picture 'GUPPY III').
