The SE5 was the favoured mount of Biggles' rival, Captain Wilkinson of 287 Squadron, in the W.E.Johns novels. Biggles sometimes referred to him as 'Old Wilks', despite the fact that he must have been in his early 20s at most.

The Royal Aircraft Factory SE5 was a successful fighter aircraft which continued in service for a period following WWI.
