Description
The light in the FAA Museum at Yeovilton was not brilliant in this hall, but I managed this shot of Grumman F4F-4 Martlet I AL246. Later called the Wildcat to bring it in line with joint UK / US operations, the Martlet gave sterling service in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Bizarrely, the Martlet had a manually-operated undercarriage, raised and lowered by a hand-crank on the right of the cockpit. At times this led to a rather undulating take-off as the pilot wound up the wheels upon leaving the flight deck.....
