Description Another view of the carrier HMS Ark Royal awaiting her fate atΒ Devonport in 1980. She was the fourth Royal Navy ship to bear the name, her illustrious predecessor, the wartime Ark Royal having been torpedoed and sunk en route to Gibraltar. Ark Royal number four was launched in 1950 and design changes delayed her commissioning until 1955. She underwent a number of refits with a major modernisation in the late 1960s to enable her to operate American Phantom aircraft.

In 1976, the BBC filmed a documentary on board and this series, 'Sailor' became associated with Rod Stewart's song 'Sailing', used as the programme's theme. The Captain, Wilfred Graham R.N. later became a Rear Admiral and was known as 'Big Wilf'. The other 'star' of the series was a ventriloquist's dummy called 'Little Wilf' who had his own show on board and was featured 'interviewing' Captain Graham on the Ark's bridge. A bit of leg-pulling by the lower deck taken in good part by the Captain.

All that was in the past, however, when I took my photograph and you can see that the radar aerials have been removed (no doubt a lot of other stuff as well). Mutterings were made for her preservation but the authorities would have none of it and away she went to Cairnryan for cutting. It would have been a hell of a job to preserve her though and there was a rumour at the time that she had more or less rusted in half and was only just holding together. I find that difficult to believe.

The City of Plymouth lies behind the great ship.

Using my editing skills, I can make her look like she was brand spanking new. Β

Thanks. Its just a damn shame the UK has none of these as museums, and their last chance has just left for the junkheap.Β

Sad to see another history sunk. But preservation really cost a lot. Sometimes it is just not worth the cost and time. I wonder if we can preserve her in another way?

Only in pictures now sadly. Although I think her anchors were saved.

Some clever person produced flightsim scenery with the "Ark" in 4 places around the globe. It is glorious but also shows how much smaller than the big USA carriers she was. hard enough doing a decklanding on the USS Nimitz but on the Ark it is well scary - and that is "only" a sim. I already had a Buccaneer Mk2 and a Sea Vixen though so it is great to relive the old days.

They used to say that landing a Buccaneer on an RN carrier was a controlled crash! The forward arrestor wire was known as the ferchrissake wire, because if you missed that one...... Cheers for the fave!

Yes - it is scary enough on the sim but great fun!
It was an addon I bought for Fs2002 which then didn't work on 2004. That left me with a lot of Carriers (mainly USA) all over the world but no arrester/catapult facility.
Then some kind soul made a hack that used gauges in any aircraft so fitted to make these work. I transmogrified all the cable catch zones so all the carriers worked as such again (plus a few shore bases for practice) and then faced defining 4 catapult zones on every ship. I got round that by defining the whole globe as a zone so I could theoretically get one anywhere. In practice I taxy to the correct spot and wait for the blast shield to power into place etc. With the launch selected from a small gauge, brakes on and all checks done it is only necessary to select full go and release brakes - whooomph - 140 kts almost instantly (or anything you pre-set).
Landing on is a joy with a catch (usually for me No2 wire) while of course going to full power in case of a bolter. Watching a replay we see 22 tons of fire-breathing tinware brought to a halt with all the sound effects then pulled back slightly, hook disengaged and wire retracting all the long way back. Powerful stuff! - bettered only by my Vulcan doing a QRA start then a takeoff and steep climb and just (ahem) over the vertical to roll back onto level at 3000 ft only seconds later What helps is that, as a long time R/C pilot I can also happily fly from in front looking back at an aircraft - a really great view of something like that . I made a Youtube vid called "A Vulcan Dreams" but it doesn't do it justice (or the intake resonance I added in to the sound files)

Very interesting piece of history there. No matter how 'bad' they say a ship was to warrant it's final demolition, I still think it to be a sad fate. To think of all the people they served, be they a military vessel or passenger one. I didn't know there were so many named Ark Royal, I was only really aware of the one sunk en route.

It's a treat to a maritime enthusiast though to see these images!

I really appreciate your kind comments and the faves!

The first Ark Royal was Admiral Howard's flagship against the Armada, so the name goes back a long way. I agree that it is a sad thing to think of a great ship, home to so many sailors, being cut to pieces. In some ways it's better that they go down fighting, like Hood, but then you get the terrible loss of life so there's no good outcome either way.

You're very right. It is sad for them to be scrapped, and sinking does seem more of an honourable way, but like you said, all the lives lost make that just as bad.

Hood is coming soon - quality is not brilliant but I thought it might be worth including as it is from the same 1935 set.
