One of the conditions of helping Britain rebuild its economy at the end of the Second World War was that she open up her closed market system, known as the Commonwealth.     Her largely socialist economy then had to compete with the US free market, and the tax base to support her once large military dwindled, until Thatcher came along to privatize it.  Now that the UK has more wealth there's a realization that there aren't really many conventional enemies to fight, and therefore no longer the need to maintain the large military it once had.

But, that may change in the coming years.  Hold onto your hats.
