Description The recent visit of 'Flying Scotsman' to Cornwall brought forth rather a glut of photographs of the great locomotive in the West of England. Hence I have saved this picture until now.

The speed limit past the GWR depot at Laira, Plymouth, is 70mph. Nos. 60103 'Flying Scotsman' and Black 5 44871 (hidden under the exhaust) must have been doing all of that heading east past a grey Laira with the Cathedrals Express on October 8, 2018.

I took the picture from this side to make the train not the primary focus but as part of the whole depot scene and also to ensure that 'Cleopatra's Needle', the accursed radio mast, was not growing out of the train in my shot. They couldn't have put it in a worse place.

The HSTs in shot give an 'old and new' aspect and will, in turn, become 'heritage.'

Most fitting Flying Scotsman is running in tandem with the 44871 since Mr. Riley completed the final work on the locomotive's overhaul when the Great Gathering was celebrated.  I hope the locomotive returns to the United States in the not too distant future.  Flying Scotsman FTW!

It would be good if she did a trip over to you guys - it would reprise the Alan Pegler trip and hopefully with a happier outcome!

Oh yes!  I can tell just by looking at Flying Scotsman that she's always happy and very grateful and lucky to be around today.  People say she looks hideous in the A3 locomotive's final BR guise, but I much prefer her not in LNER (later early BR) apple green.  Yes, I like that color very much, but the BR "Middle Chrome Green" looks much better and is very relaxing, almost like BR wanted to make you feel like there's nothing to fear or worry about while driving the locomotive.

My personal preference is for apple green with the double chimney but no smoke deflectors although any version is great and I will be out with my camera - of course!
