She had never expected this to happen, they had tried so many times but it all ended in failure. Rafiki said the time just wasn't right each time. But it was to the point where they both settled with the decision that the crown would bypass an heir and go to Mufasa's brother. There was a large enough age gap between Mufasa and Taka that the future king would still be young enough to have cubs of his own.But when the signs started showing; Sarabi was wary to go to Rafiki once more. But this time was different. As he looked closer at her stomach his eyes lit up and he did a tribal call to the Great Kings that the time was right, and an heir was on the way.
"Mufasa, I'm expecting."

I CAN'T BE THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THERE'S AN AGE GAP BETWEEN MUFASA AND SCAR AND THE REASON SCAR WAS PISSED WHEN SIMBA WAS BORN WAS BECAUSE HE ACTUALLY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE KING.

I also have the head-canon of Sarabi and Mufasa having trouble conceiving as the reason they hadn't had a cub earlier. After all, they seemed to be fully grown adults when they had Simba while Nala and Simba were definitely much younger than they were when they had cubs.

I kinda laugh because of how lions breed. They basically do it none stop for two days, coupling perhaps a hundred times or more when she's in heat.
Basically ensures pregnancy.

The way they talk in the movies makes it sound like Scar was meant to be king before Simba came along. As well as an age giveaway (at least to me) are the nosestripes. Light stripes mean an older male while dark stripes mean a younger. In the beginning of the movie Scar has a dark stripe and Mufasa's is light. Later in the movie Scars is light.
Just a fan theory.

Well, if Mufasa doesn't have any children, then the heir would be Scar when Mufasa dies. I always thought that's what they meant.

I really like this idea! It makes Simba's birth and being there so much more special but also so much more meaning behind Scar's emotions

That's what I believe happened, Sarabi and Mufasa were problems in having cubs and as time went by it seem like they weren't and Scar was going to be first in line in becoming king but that got swept away then Sarabi finally was expecting.
