Can I use this (great!) picture in a homework assignment? We're supposed to design book covers for class, and the (pretend) book is about inscts.

Oh my god, this reminds me of my summer vacation. I was sitting in the garden, when something dropped on me, I didnt bother to look, assuming it was some sort of leaf. I grab it, and it doesnt FEEL like a leaf. I looked at it and it was this FAT ugly brown caterpilar. I went yellow and dropped it, then slowly poked it. It was so scary. to your son.

We have those in the South, but I do not have them in my area for some reason, I think too close to the mountains and colder. Phew! There is one way to deal with them...pest control.

I always worry about teeth.

Ever read "War against the Chtorr?" Giant worms destroy Earth. Not pretty.

That sounds like an interesting book...yikes!!! Did YOU read it???

only-zuul In reply to CrackedCupcake [2005-09-19 01:02:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes, the whole series. They're fantastic. (The last book or so gets a little strange, but I hung in there.)

If you go to read them, make sure to get the updated "writer's cut/unabridged" version; they cut a bunch of things the first go-round because they thought the books would be less acceptable that way...

ps. if you're not a sci-fi/fantasy fan, just skip them!!

The boys found it in a cocoon it was building. They put it back in the crook of the tree.

They are very beautiful I love pretty much all the moths in the Giant Silk moth family. One of my favorites is the Madagascar Moon Moth O_O they are huge and bright yellow

Aww ^^ I love Caterpillars... They're kinda scary looking, but cute at the same time... This one looks ginormous, but the child's hand is probably small...

I'd eat it, but nature tells me NO. Stupid yellow means caution.

CrackedCupcake In reply to stoicnimwit [2005-08-11 14:47:19 +0000 UTC]

This one was like a hot dog in girth...maybe 3-4" long, very large. Other than the spines...I bet it would be a tasty treat if you were starving or maybe dipped it in chocolate. I ALMOST got brave enough to put it on my tongue and take a pic, but I didn't feel in the mood for pics of me...(party pooper)

stoicnimwit In reply to CrackedCupcake [2005-08-11 16:00:16 +0000 UTC]

^^ Hehe... yeah, it seemed like a pretty fat caterpillar... I've never entertained the idea of eating a bug dipped in chocolate, but I get the feeling that I'm missing out on something...

what a great kid to just hold the creature that way... I remember kids who would have it smashed to smithereens instead of gently cradling it in their hand...

another beautiful shot, my dear!

I found that out in my research online! It's amazing how beautiful and colorful their larvae are, then the moth itself is not all that colorful...so I guess it's their time to shine!
