Description I don't have a macro lens, but I can pretend.

EDIT/ easy to confuse with a tomato hornworm; both can even be found on tomato OR tobacco plants, which are closely related!

Odd that most pictures I see of these have the parasitic wasp pupae(?) on them. Nice to see one without nature being terrifying.

It's so cute
The "eyes" are pretty neat. Did this little guy inspire Caterpie?

Nah, Caterpie is a spicebrush swallowtail caterpillar, and its design doesn't exaggerate a thing:

The real caterpillar has that forked, orange "horn" Caterpie has, but it's usually hidden. It's protruded when the caterpillar is startled, so that it looks a little like a snake's head and tongue. The horn also STINKS! Horribly!

It's a tobacco hornworm! Black "tail" = tomato hornworm, this is of the utmost importance! 8D I love how contrasted this is; makes the eyeballs look super creepy >3

So THAT'S what those are called! A lot of them live in a tomato bush I have growing in my backyard, and I had a feeling they weren't caterpillars.

This is a real nice photo, too. The hornworm looks awfully cuddly.

Actually, they are caterpillars. They're just called "worms". They're the larval stage of a species of hawk moth.

Oh, awesome! So they'll turn into moths. That's great!

Pretty but devastating to my garden. Love to see praying mantids gobble them up.

That liquid is coming out the wrong end of the caterpillar to be drool...

That's the butt, silly. The head is where its legs are, at the opposite end.
