Description Part of the Germanic warrior kit I made for my kid. I never took a picture of this helmet right after it was made, so as of this photo it's seen some wear-and-tear (adds character). The design is again an amalgamation of several different Germanic designs (though I used leather instead of metal). The neck guard is held together by metal rings I bent out of wire. All other pieces are rivetted (hardware was purchased). The inset picture shows the pattern lightly tooled into each of the helmets panels. They were based on the Newgrange stone in Ireland.

I didn't use a pattern. I just kind of winged it. I learned some good advice early on concerning leatherwork. With anything difficult/complicated make it out of cardboard first. So, it was originally cardboard held together with painter's tape. The parts that didn't fit were adjusted accordingly, and then I used the cardboard pieces as the pattern. I'll try to draw you a basic picture of what it looks like on your profile message board.

...and thank you for the compliment.

hm... you know... that's brilliant, using cardboard to make a mock up first. I'll definitely have to do that when I try making a helm on Wednesday (my next craftsmenship class).

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me learn more about leather working. just the hint about the cardboard will help me progress leaps and bounds from where I am right now. I really can't thank you enough!

Woah, cool....like a REAL helm? Metal and all? That'd be a cool class. I'd love to see a pic when you finish it.

It's my pleasure...the Daily Deviation sent me from having 5 watchers (including 2 brothers, a friend, and an alias), to having all these people asking my art/craft advice. I have to admit it's a lot of fun to feel like my skills are respected enough to ask how I do the stuff I do, and I'm not going to pass up the opportunity.

So, glad I could help, and good look with any future leatherwork. Again: send a pic or link if you end up making something.

Take care!

I'm going to try making it with metal (if my teacher has big enough sheets) but if not then I'll just stick to leather.

You got a DD? I didn't even notice. I actually found your work while browsing through leather crafts.

I'll be sure to send you pics!!! I just hope I don't fail to badly on them. xD
