Download for full view. My only two canine OCs, Mbala and Kacia, needed new designs and ref sheets, so I decided to combine them.

Story:
Kacia was only a month old when her mother was killed by lions. The pup had been learning how to hunt, so she was able to feed herself for several weeks, but survival was not easy. She was constantly at the mercy of bigger predators. She had to learn to be tough, but also learn when to back down.

Mbala, as the daughter of her pack's matriarch and the only surviving pup of the litter, would have been spoiled were it not for the high expectations and rigorous training she underwent to prepare her to be the alpha of her own pack one day. From an early age she learned to conceal her emotions, appearing strong and silent, so as to intimidate any would-be challengers.

One day, when Mbala was nearly two months old, her mother sent her on a lone hunt to test her survival skills. That was when she met Kacia. The two pups were understandably wary of each other at first, but after a great deal of talk, and more than a little fighting, they began to understand each other. Mbala felt sympathy towards Kacia, and decided to help her by sneaking food from her own pack's kills. This went on for a few days before the two were discovered. Mbala pleaded with her mother to let Kacia become a member of their pack. The alpha eventually yielded, admitting the young outsider.

For all that Mbala was her friend, Kacia was never fully accepted by the pack. Some of her scars had been earned when she was forced to survive on her own, but most, including the notches in her ears, came from the vicious nips of Mbala's pack mates whenever they felt Kacia had forgotten her place. Kacia held firm, though, patiently allowing herself to be subjugated.

All the while Mbala was falling in love with her new friend. She was looking forward to the day when she'd leave to form her own pack with Kacia by her side. But when Mbala was just over two years old, the pack was hunting wildebeest when suddenly everything went wrong. A small group of dogs was separated from the rest of the pack and surrounded by angry wildebeest. Most of the dogs were killed, including the alpha male and the second highest ranking female. Mbala's mother risked her life by running headlong into the herd to try to retrieve her pack mates, but she herself was mortally wounded and died within a few hours.

Now the pack was dwindling, and lacking most of its high ranking members. Mbala, grieving for her mother, was convinced it was her responsibility to take her mother's place as alpha female. By this time, Kacia had begun to return Mbala's feelings toward her, but since the pack still didn't fully accept Kacia, her status could not be raised by becoming the mate of an alpha. Knowing Mbala needed her, though, Kacia decided to stay. But every day she is torn. Part of her wants to be free of the tyranny of the pack, but day by day she grows more attached to Mbala.

Like my story? I feel like eventually I'll write more detailed accounts of how Kacia and Mbala met, and their life together.
