I still don't understand how you can shade with a pencil.

My pencil drawings usually result in ... crap and lots of graphite on my hand from accidentally smudging the drawing T_T

Build the shading up. Use the rubber loads. Don't press down too hard... unless you know why you want to press down so hard. Rub out loads. Loads and loads and loads so that your classmates scream at you for rubbing out a perfectly good eye for the tenth time in a row. And... do not smudge. Shade. Not smudge.

... that's just me. And I'm not very good, so take it with a bucketful of salt.

I don't try to smudge! But it's just when I put my hand down it eh ... ends up getting smudged.
