Well, we also have many plant names of which only a small part of the name can be translated. I think it's because of the evolution of our languages - some words are forgotten.
It's a little sad :/

haha yeah in my language, most of the names of flowers or trees ar anything like that are meaningless. they are just known as names of flowers or trees. lol nothing else.yeah, maybe its because of the evolution of languages.

I am going to post a picture of a common flower in Swedish spring. It's called "vitsippa". "Vit" means "white", but the other part is not commonly known.
Anyway, the English name for "vitsippa" is "windflower", but "sippa" does not sound like it has anything to do with wind :S

Windflower? I've never heard of it. But the name is quite sweet.
The word vit is somewhat similar to the English word white, don't you think? Actually all of the languages originated from a single mother language, In case of Europe it is latin, In case of India it is Sanskrit. So the resultant languages are different yet similar.
And you're from Sweden, right?
