Thank you so much! Thank you for the thoughts on the last line, too - I think that's the most clear assessment anyone's made of it and I think I agree with you. Thinking about it like that makes the line sit a little better in my head.
Finally, thankyou so much for the favorite and the watch! You're seriously awesome!

Aww. I was kind of hoping for a what-if story where civilization deals with a supernova in the sky that is close enough to be dangerous to life on Earth.

Off the top of my head, can't think of much we'd be able to do about it! This piece is definitely much more mundane than that though.Β

Well obviously it wouldn't be possible to do anything about preventing it from happening, especially since it'd happen without warning, the story would be about the aftermath. It's a bit like duck and cover for dealing with a nuclear bomb. Sure, if you're at ground 0, it's futile, but contrary to popular belief, it would actually be quite likely very effective, because chances are, you won't be at ground zero, you'll be in the much larger region which is only going to get very hot, bright and unpleasant, not the tiny region where everything is vaporized. So if there's a supernova that's close enough to do a lot of damage to life on Earth but not enough to annihilate it, then there would be a story to be told about dealing with it. Governments collapsing, people killed, ecological disasters, religious movements it results in, etcetera.

A supernova is so powerful that, if one were to explode in our galactic backyard, it would strip away our Ozone Layer.

I suppose our only hope is one doesn't explode so nearby, then!

I don't know what it is about stories that I don't understand, but I like them. And I LIKE this one.

or bounce too close to a supernova - that'd end yer trip real quick!

Yes.Β I just wish I could remember the line that came after that. I do remember that he had a "wouldn't it" at the end of the line, though.

Aimee: Darn it! Why can't I remember the line?!*facepalm*
Rai: And you call yourself a Star Wars geek. *shakeshead*

Β Don't you mean "deflector?" (Sorry. Couldn't resist. But itΒ IS spelled with an extra"L," though.)
Β Watch it kid or you'll find yourself floating home.
Β
Or maybe that came before the supernova.

PS: I'm pretty sure FFM wants to collect FFMs that turned into DDs. You might want to note this piece to the account.

I think you're right in that the last line doesn't have overwhelming impact, but there are a few others that do. "But the sound of the highway underneath us always struck me as the soundtrack to us" is good, and "She couldn't sit still long enough to color in the details, so we never did" is excellent, especially for FFM.
VIVA FFM!
Congrats on the DD, and thanks for sharing.

The last line felt a bit... forced... like you were making too much of an effort to link it to the rest of the piece, but I like your style and the way it flows naturally, like a person's train of thought.

This was great! I love this--->"Wouldn't it be great if we could watch a star explode?"
It was just like her to say that. The violence of another world's ending was, to her, poetic. If our own sun exploded, I think she'd open up her arms to embrace it.
Also this--->"When stars exploded a long time ago, they painted pictures of them and wondered if the gods were looking down on them. What do you think we'll do when we get to see one?"
"Take a picture."
She shot an expression at me that I was familiar with: You have no imagination, it said.
