The Tatra Mountains are the highest range in the Carpathians, but also the highest between the Alps and the Urals and the Caucasus.The high-mountain part of the Tatras with a glacial character is extremely important for Poland, but also attractive for tourists.
The Tatras are under protection due to the creation of the Tatra National Park, the Slovak Tatra National Park and joining the UNESCO Biosphere area.
The ethnographic lands surrounding the Tatra Mountains are: Podhale, Spisz, Orawa and Liptov.
The Tatras are divided into: Western Tatras, Eastern Tatras, High Tatras and Belianske Tatras. The highest peak on the Polish side is Rysy.
