Description
For RCF2, we needed to give Ratchet and upgraded ship after he crashed it. The Aphelion had a kind of soul, so it was important to not just let it crash and go to waste. Then we all agreed to make it Azimuth have a similar ship to add to the lore Lombax's to have similar ships. So we gave him his own version of the ship. I couldn't help but be a little excited that it also allowed us to use a lot of exiting models to start from during production! Love me some time savers!!!Related content

The aphelions are so awesome, but what happened to the Star explorer from the PS2 titles (starting at Going commando)? or the ship he had in the PSP titles?

Both sleek AND sharp! While they're both brilliant designs, I find the lower one to be a little more interesting. It seems a little less practical, but a lot more aesthetically pleasing in terms of color scheme and overall design. The top one reminds me of Up Your Arsenal, and lower is more Deadlocked. I love them both, though!

I do wonder though, what kind of material is the main area of the wings made of in the bottom picture? It sorta looks like an energy sheet. Of sorts. 
I do like those cuts you have in the nose... *takes notes* XD

One question that I hope you will bother answering, though XD; Since Aphelion has a name, and since Azimuth has a similar ship, I was wondering if you ever discussed giving Azimuth's ship a name? If you could choose a name, which would you have taken?

Of all the ships I have ever seen in all manner of media, be it games, television, film, comics, or anything else, I can say with certainty that The Aphelion is the coolest looking one of them all. I can't quite place why, exactly, but the design appeals to a uniquely high degree to my sense of aesthetics.

Awesome stuff, I like the common fuselage between Aphelion and... whatever Azimuth's ship may be called (and whether or not it's sentient. Or a girl). One thing I am curious about are the light wings in this design which aren't in the final game. Any reason for the change?

yeah. When the space combat got implemented, the silhouettes needed to be made more clear, so one of our modelers made a set of crazy big techy wings that solved the issue. Came out really good in the end.

Oh yeah I get it, so that from the back it'd be more distinctive. While I like the light wing idea I think the new ones look better (a shame the upgrades aren't visible when on a planet!).
I think overall Aphelion could have used a bit more screen time, she could have been a cool way for Ratchet to learn a bit about the Lombaxes.
