Hans Grans was born on the 7th of July 1901 in Hannover ( Germany).
As a young man he had several jobs, but lost them all, because of unpunctuality or stealing money. In 1919, just 18 years old, broken with his family and sleeping in local pubs, he earned money by dealing with clothes and as a parttime rent boy. This is how he met Fritz Haarmann, with whom he lived with for the next couple of years, stealing, begging and swindling from one complaint to the next. Both men stayed together in an on-off-relationship based not that much on sex, but their financial and emotional addiction to each other. Until in 1924 police found out that Fritz Haarmann had killed at least 24 boys and young men over the last couple of years, with Grans not just knowing what was going on but selling their clothes, sometimes leading and offering the victims to Haarmann to get them.
On 26th of June 1924 Grans was arrested. On 19th December 1924 he was sentenced to death, the verdict was later changed to 12 years in prison because of Haarmann suddenly claiming Grans had known nothing at all.
In 1936, at the end of his sentence, Hans Grans was send to different KZs, among them Sachsenhausen, Mittelbau-Dora and Bergen-Belsen in which he was freed in 1945 by the Britains. They imprisoned him again until he was released in January 1946.
He died in 1975.
Creation inspired by the new novel "Haarmann" by Dirk Kurbjuweit, sold by Penguin Verlag 🐧
