Description Pictured: White Mask male and Black Mask female

The Maykari were once a kind and prosperous people, working in harmony with the other races within the Stellar Alliance. But then, the collapse, and the Age of Ignorance swept through the stars. Without money, allies or resources, the Maykari hurled the one thing they did have at their problems. Their population. A race that respected life, art and culture was forced to become a meat grinder to hold back extinction. And it worked. Through the sacrifice of billions, they emerged alive from the darkness. But they were now changed. Life was a disposable tool, designed to be used until it broke or was no longer useful than cast away.

Through cloning, the Maykari made life a disposable resource. Billions of clones now work as slaves in labor; building their ships and cities and fighting their wars. Meanwhile, the rare purebloods work in a vicious chain for the betterment of all. Individuality is not only discouraged, it is feared and disgusted. To stand out means to be separate and vulnerable. Only by remaining one with others and staying behind your “True Self” will you and your species survive. Xenophobic and frightful, they despise all life that isn’t their own, and even that has little true value. Only the Aracta are tolerated, for they not only supply them with more exotic and useful slaves, but buy up their own slaves in bulk to help fund the advancement of the Maykari.

Maykari society is split into different castes, referred to as Masks. Leaving your Mask to become other is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, with only a few castes being able to do so. What you are born, or created into, is your future and your self. There is nothing else.

- Pale Masks: Maykari slaves. Breed and cloned to act as manual labor and unskilled work, they are poorly treated and fed, not expected to live for very long. They were blank, featureless white masks and most have their horns clipped and filed to avoid snagging or self harm.

- White Masks: Maykari citizen. These are a mixture of clones and purebloods that work more skilled labor jobs, such as financing, skilled repair and construction and travel. Their white masks are simple, sporting eye lenses and occasionally hand panted bands or prints to distinguish specific fields of work.

- Blue Masks: Guild Members. These are the members of elite crafting guilds who do exquisite work, such as jeweling, tailoring, architecture and engineering design. All members are born into this caste and where this distinction with pride on their masks. These sport not only eye lenses, but patterns resembling a smiling or laughing mouth, with blue bands, symbols or digits to distinguish their specific Guild.

- Red Masks: Maykari military. Consisting almost exclusively of aggressive clones breed to be tougher, larger and more aggressive than the rest of their kin. However, their generals are purebloods, descended from a proud family of warriors. Their masks are harsh and aggressive; sporting red stripes and eye lenses paired with shapes reminiscent of snarls, sneers and glares.

Gold Masks: Maykari Politicians. The political elite are descended directly from the leaders from before, and therefor have bloodlines stretching back many thousands of years. Dresses in masks accented in gold with jeweled eyes and crowns of feathers, they stand out from others, but often blend in with their own, with only subtle patterns known only to them to distinguish familial ties.

Black Masks: Maykari Outcasts. When a citizen commits a heinous act, such as practicing Psionic Sorcery, fraternizes with aliens or ignores their Mask to interact or behave like another, they are forever shamed. Their masks are cracked, fracturing to reveal one of their eyes and forever exposing the shame within. Their soul has been broken, never to heal again, and for it they are caste out. Banished from mayakri space to wonder forever in darkness and loneliness to die forever separated from paradise. Such a sentence almost always drives the culprit mad, resulting in an ugly death. But a few find refuge and companionship with other races, and struggle to rebuild. This makes Black Masks the most commonly encountered Maykari in the Galaxy.

Behold the maykari; xenophobic goat people who view individuality as taboo and monstrous. Enjoy!
