It seems like the black panther is eating something nice.

The background looks so natural - so much better than the wire I think I am going to be stalking these all day on the 25th

It's a shame they all came out blurred. I did get a few of this one, all with the greenery behind him.

The people who went on Saturday were all trying out using fill in flash - I don't know what their result were but as I only had the flash on the camera I was getting everything with green eye so gave up - I don't know how to stop that happening - maybe they are all photoshop geniuses or something?! - although it was cloudy it was quite a good light till later in the evening - not too bright to blow the whites but light enough to see the detail - in the cats and the fence

From what I see from flashes is; whatever the circumstances; the picture WILL fail.
That is why even in the darkest areas of the zoo I don't use flash and just trust on my stand-still-ness (no tripod ) to make pics of decent quality.
Add fences with it; and you can see it fail plenty of times... but when it works; it looks great...

Oh at last a man after my own heart I don't use a tripod either (well only a couple of times when not in public) I think I would find them very cumbersome and restrictive when trying to do animals - when the animal moves and you have a tripod to shift around I always think I would miss the best 'action' shots

When it is bright then indeed; yes... a tripod may only get in the way. But sometimes I wish I had one when taking pics in the darker areas of the zoos (like with the lynxes and white wolves in Duisburg)

However; with the wolves it might get hard getting pics without (through the holes with a normal cam is easy) fence on it...

*too much typing... lays paws to rest

I find it so hard to use a tripod - unless I have lots of space and lots of time. If it was in a dark area under trees or something and I had been before so knew I couldn't get pictures without one I may be tempted but then would probably be kicking myself when I got all tied up in a knot trying to get it to move onto something really exciting that was happening somewhere else - which I probably missed because I was fighting with tripod knobs I used one for the lightning shots - and the moon and will be taking one with me tomorrow for the fireworks but love the freedone hand held gives me so am a bit loathed to use one if I can help it!

You need to position the flash so it isn't directly in front. Any sort of angle stops it. I realise you have no control over this, I too have the same problem.
If you do have any really good shots that are ruined by this, I could sort it out for you, but that is entirely your choice as to whether you would want to send the file. There are programmes that do this automatically, but the ones I've seen, don't really do it completely. I just pick up the colours from around the edge, of the eye, and paint it in. I have loads of my dog's, that I have saved, this way.

Hmmm... would that also work on pics with great variation in colors.

I have a black panther... but using brightness to make it visible as a panther makes the already overlighted green bush behind it (never seen foliage that green on a pic; don't know what did it) painfull and very surreal to the eyes

Not many other pics (as far as I can see) with such a problem... but that is probably due to me never using flash

You might be able to do something. Try messing with the hue, and saturation and anything else you can find. Just mess around with it. You don't have to save it. I'm still learning these things myself.
