one of the most incredible charcoals I've ever seen. Immaculate. Not a single smudge mark. It's absolutely beautiful. Great work

Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I really enjoy it! Out of curiosity.. how did you avoid smudges???
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
crimmy In reply to afireinsideme [2004-04-20 12:07:24 +0000 UTC]
when I draw, I place a scrap piece of printer paper over the drawing so my hand never touches the paper. If I don't, I tend to get charcoal on the heal of my hand and on my pinky and cause smudges as I move around. The worst smudges, though, are usually caused by the oil in your skin. If you touch the paper, the oil in your skin soaks into the paper, and makes darker spots when charcoal is applied (impossible to erase most of the time)

exelent work.
you make me wanna try charcoal one day. I keep saying it, but never get to it, i even have some odd bits of the stuff i stole from art class in high school, but i hate how it turns out on regular paper.
I bet for another medium you would enjoy oil painting, for the way it blends.

I'm glad you like it. I'm not much of a painter. I am, however, a high school art teacher. No wonder I never have enough art supplies for my classes.

Yeah, it is from the cover of come away with me. I turned up the contrast a little, but not too much. The photographer did a great job on that photo.
I love playing with lighting. My favorite thing to do is get a small lamp with a large cover...like a grow light has. I turn off the lights in the room and move the lamp around until I have the contrast I want. For some reason, I like portraits that run off the page or cut some portion of the head off.
Try playing around with the lamp in front of a large mirror in a dark room to see what effects you can get. Hope that helps.
