Description This is the final draft. This is a charcoal drawing done for a lady I work with. This is her horse, Tuffy. This took about 8-9 hours to complete. It is done on a light brown paper with a light texture. The paper is a pain in the butt, and I wouldn't recommend using it. Darker seems to be better.
I'm leaving the first draft up for a couple of days, but I will take it down soon.

Gorgeous work! I love the brilliance of the white and despite whatever problems you had with the paper, the brown makes a nice contrast. Fabulous! +fav

wow great job on this one....i really like it!!!! you did an awesome job on the bridle, which can be very difficult at times to do

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. The bridle gave me trouble when I was shading it. The black and white charcoal on that brown paper just produced a strange tone that I was never really happy with. I thought that I never got it really looking like leather.

The horse's muzzle seems a bit stiff, somehow. Overall, though, it's a terrific work. How did you get the colors in? I thought one could only do blacks & grays with charcoal sticks. It certainly doesn't look like you added color in Photoshop--the paper texture shows in the way that traditional media have. That's a good thing.

Nice job.

Thanks for the comments. The horse actually looks exactly like my reference photo did, though. I only used black and white on the brown paper. The body looks brown because of the paper showing through. Glad you liked it.

Amazing work, and charcoal no less! I find it's a very unforgiving medium.. I'm impressed.

thanks, I appreciate that. I like it because it is so quick. You can cover large areas ten times faster than you can with a graphite pencil. You sacrifice some of the detail, but if you use a sharp blending stump, it's not that bad.

You talk of sacrificing detail, but you yourself pack more in with charcoal than most people get with pencil.

I appreciate that, but you should really take a look at some of the artists whose works I have in my favorite list. Most of them are working with mechanical pencils and are amazing at what they do.
Anyways, thanks very much for the compliment.

The lighting is a little different on this pic. I took it at school under flourescent lighting. The other one was taken at home under incandescent lighting. Not a problem when you turn the image black and white, but it is pretty evident in color.
